Customer Reviews
Retro - but in a good way
I can't understand other reviewers who have said it is dull and sounds like Jean Michel Jarre. They obviously weren't around in the late 70's and earlier 80's to know where Marc Nguyen Tan gets his inspiration from. If you like Suicide, Joy Division, Modern English and other such bands from this period then you'll love this album. It's a close contender for my album of 2003. The bonus DVD is OK, not stunning, but I think the inclusion of such discs is an excellent idea and one that more artists should adopt.
Excellent Dance Album
I have read quite a few good reviews of this and received a promo of it. It only took the first listen for me to see that the hype is justified. This great LP has been infused with the spirit of wonderful bands Joy Division, Kraftwerk, Can, Suicide and Low. However, these influences sound refreshing rather than plagiarist, and the album has a thoroughly modern feel.
Out of the 9 tracks, none stand out, they are all very good, and Colder isn't a bad lyricist either. His voice and vocals are perfect for his music. Its atmospheric, very well crafted digi-funk for the head, heart, and soul!
First Junior Senior and now this. This is where dance music, and music in general, should be in 2003.
One of the year's best
This album just came out of nowhere. Hailed as 'the next big thing' by the media (which usually spells creative disaster for an artist), Colder thankfully did prove to be a superb artist and he has made an excellent album.
Sounding like nothing else this year, or even previous years for that matter, 'Again' stands out as something special in an uninspired market.
One thing I liked about it especially was that critics found it hard to classify it into any musical genre. Good enough for them, why does everything have to be placed into a 'genre' and classified!
Musically though it is really special. The opener 'Crazy Love' is wonderful, a horn-type synth motif backed by an early 80's type guitar line, it evolves into a forboding track. Try listening to it in the dark, it gives a feeling of almost hallucinationagenic imagination. You can let your mind run free to this music.
Elsewhere there is the dub-tinged 'One Night in Tokyo' is a solid track, 'Version' is all building guitar noise into a sublime percussion-led track and the song 'Colder' itself is very Cabaret Voltaire-ish and good for it too.
If you're looking for something that little bit special or out there from the rest, try this out. The best I can do to tell you what it is like is to say that it's a mix between new wave, dub, punk, electronica and pop. I told you it was hard to describe! I don't like comparing it to other group's work, because I feel that would lessen the creative edge that went into these songs.
