Breathing new(ish) life into t**p-h*p4
If you took Portishead, Mr. Scruff, Roisin Murphy, the Cinematic Orchestra and maybe a quarter each of Sia, Helicopter Girl and Erykah Badu, chopped them into little bits, put the bits into a bag and pulled them out one by one until you had enough to make a new band with, one of the possible random combinations would be Belleruche. Which is no bad thing, because if their music isn't exactly groundbreaking it certainly is well-crafted, engaging, intelligent and listenable. Not every track is quite as memorable as it should be but every debut is allowed its flaws and these don't stand in the way of some excellent and characterful music. At their best Belleruche ably stand comparison with any of the artists listed above and I'll be keenly watching to see what they do next.

Drab early nineties rehash3
After giving this a good half a dozen listens and placing my trust in the other reviewers on this page I have to say that I really don't understand what all the fuss is about. We've been down the female vocalist, one guy on the turntables, another on the guitar road plenty times before. Turntable Soul Music is a very apt description of what Belleruche do - it's gentle, polished and unlikely to cause offense - it all adds up to a pretty tame listen.
"Northern Girls," kicks off the record with an energetic driving beat. Is it me, or can you not hear singer Katrin DeBoer's voice if you turn this up loud? It seems lost somewhere in the mix. I find the singing on this frail and pretty unremarkable, lacking the astonishing purity of a Skye Edwards, or the battered, haunting quality of Beth Gibbins. It's a play it safe voice - lacking in subtlety or raw emotional power.
The tracks on this that really stand out are, "Minor Swing," with its infectious bouncing trombone driven rhythm - very good, awoke me from my slumber - and the gentle, wispy laments of,"Reflection,"and,"13:6:35."
The rest is a largely drab set of passable tunes, a style rehashed from the early nineties for those who missed the boat the first time round.

Just loving this album5
So, I found tru-thoughts in a round about way - partly through big chill type stuff and partly through Mr Scruff, if 'tru-thoughts' 'Big Chill' or 'Mr Scruff' means anything to you then do youself a favour and just stop readin and buy this album - you will like it, trust me.

If however you're going 'huh, what?' then let me try to explain. Imagine really funky guitar, influenced with the mearest hint of bossa, now add to that some really cheeky bass lines and drums that hint at all those hard to find 45s that top DJs like to mix into something that packs dance floors. OK now mellow all that down just a step with s sensual, smoky, sexy female vocal that sings about your life and all those heart-aches and highs you are gonig through right now. That is Belleruche. And they rum the gamut from get up and leap around dancy tunes to jazzy post love making snuggle music to cry your heart out 'he's gone' type stuff.

Be amongst the first to 'discover' this band and raise your album collection above the ordainary and earn 'cool points' too. Go on, what are you waiting for?
