Synopsis
Whilst the LSWR's acquisition of the Barnstaple line from under the clutches of the GWR was controversial, from this small foundation the LWSR's network extended to provide an alternative route to Plymouth as well as reaching to places such as Bude and Bodmin. Inherited by the Southern Railway at Grouping, it was under the SR that the final sections of the network were completed. In 1948 these lines passed to BR intact but, as changing traffic patterns developed and control was ceded to the Western Region, much of the ex-LSWR network was to be closed. Its neglect and decline under the management of the Western Region led to this part of the BR network being referred to by railway enthusiasts as the 'Withered Arm' though the origins of this term is believed to date back to the 1930s. This book covers all of the classic locations in the area such as Padstow, Wadebridge, Bude, Halwill Junction, Barnstaple and Ilfracome. Always a popular area with enthusiasts the 'Witheren Arm' possessed a fascinating network of lines that are explored in the pages of this book.

Excellent Nostalgia Trip
I bought this book for my Dad for Christmas along with the Withered Arm and he loved them.
Not really my thing but he said the pictures were excellent and it was a real nostalgia trip for him
Nice book - but not what I was looking for
It's probably my own fault, but I was vaguely disappointed. I was expecting a fairly coherent history of the line and its branches, but this is not it. It is a book of photographs, mostly by the author and his father, covering some parts of the network in detail. The accompanying text is interesting, and the photos are good,but......
If you want a history of how the withered arm grew and withered, of the whys and the whens, of who did what, then this isn't it.
If you want some nice pictures as a record of activity on some parts of the network, with some gentle and interesting recollections and a few facts, then buy it.
And by the way, the only map is on the back cover. I found it hard to read and was frustrated that the text did not cross refer to it at all
