Fantastic detailed book for steam locomotive freaks5
My best icq pal Malcolm sent me this book for my birthday and I just love it! It gives a very clear description of every possible aspect of steam locomotive driving. The photo's and diagrams help to explain the text further. The book is well written with a bit of that famous English sense of humour. I especially loved the pages about how to cook a good breakfast on the shovel inside the firebox of the loco. Bacon, sausages, eggs, steaks, ham, black pudding and even pasties and pies can be prepared on the footplate! Brian Topping: "Although the cooking time will vary depending on the size of the pie and the type of locomotive, they usually take about an hour". Fantastic book! Anne-Marie

An invaluable guide5
This is a tremendously useful book either for those with footplate aspirations on Britain's heritage railways, or even just for the armchair enthusiast who wants to know a bit more about engines. Of course a book like this is never going to replace practical experience, but this is easily the best reference guide out there on the operation of steam locomotives. It's not as "no-nonsense" as the old BR "Black Book", and is written in an easy but informative style which makes it easy to keep dipping into.

Locomotive Drivers Manual5
Ever wanted to know about the footplate job on a steam locomotive? If you cannot get the old BTC Enginemens handbook THIS is a worthy alternative. It actually explains the parts of the loco, and how you operate the various controls. Moreover the author applies his experience by explaining everything in a common sense language. Ideal for the beginner in the preservation world, good refresher for those already on the footplate, with new slants on the operation of the loco from an operator. Well worth having in the library/drivers bag.
