Synopsis
In this book, long-time model maker Stan Bray describes the construction of a range of uncomplicated miniature steam engines, for construction by the model engineer. Single-acting oscillator to more sophisticated twin-cylinder double-acting engines are described as well as the construction of a range of boilers. The final project brings together engine and boiler into a simple steam railway locomotive. Full drawings in both metric and imperial formats are included. Every project in this book can be completed with a minimum of workshop tools, and they are a perfect way into model engineering for the uninitiated, and the ideal relaxation for the more experienced engineer.

Customer Reviews

Not for beginners1
A disappointing book. Not enough care seems to have been taken in preparing the drawings and photographs. Mistakes in the drawings and photographs that do not match the drawings are sure to confuse the beginner to the hobby. The pity is it could have been a very good book with a little more care.

Measure twice, cut once3
What appears to be an excellent book for the first time modeller assumes that you have at least a basic knowledge of engineering techniques.
Starting with simple single cylinder engines and culminating in a basic steam locomotive, it is marred by mistakes that could trip up even the experienced engineer if time is not taken in reading the drawings carefully.
The final project to build the locomotive is spoilt by unnecessary, incorrect or missing dimensions particularly one major component but with a little forthought and care this book could give a suitable introduction to model engineering

Excellent book5
Only got the book today so I havent read it through yet but what I have seen is excellent going from simple oscilating enginges through to steam locomotive (ok it is not the flying scot but it is a locomotive) I would suggest that if you require information about cut off, steam injectors and other stuff this book is not for you but if you want to make something that actually works this is ideal.
