brilliant resource, if a little heavy to carry about!
I bought this bought this book for a first time visit to New York. I was terrified at the prospect of finding my way around such a big and busy city. I found the information about all the different available forms of transport around the city, and how to access it, particularly helpful.
What you need to bear in mind that New york is an enourmous city,Most of the major attractions are based in and around Manhatten - the books concentrates mainly of this area - there is additional information re: Brooklyn,Queens,Long Island and so on, but it is fairly brief. I guess that for most of us, a short trip To The Big Apple really just covers Manhatten - you would have a job to even attempt to cover everything you want to see in a long weekend, anyway
There is, of course, all the usual details about the most popular tourist attractions -including relevant website addresses so that you can pre-book tickets before you go.
It contains enough information about the history of Manhatten to whet your appetite,It explains about the different districts in the city, how they have grown and developed over time and also includes notes about the designers and architects of some of the buildings of interest.Some of the listed major attractions have diagrams of layouts of the builings, opening times and even when is the best time to avoid visiting, to miss the crowds!
As there are so many hotels and eateries in the city, it would be unreasonable to expect a book to go into huge reams of information about them all. I found that it gave enough information about the most popular/recommended places, across a wide variety of budgets, to allow me to find a starting point.
For those who want to go on a shopping frenzy, this book lists all the discount malls and emporiums, local markets and the high end retailers. I liked that addresses and phone numbers and map references were listed for alot of the shops and that they were separated into individual catorgories ie: jewellers, clothing, designers, museum shops etc
I very much liked the recommended walks included in the book, which advise special routes of interest with extra notes about "off the beaten track "sites to look out for - If I have any criticism here, it would be helpful to know the approximate distance the routes cover and approx time it takes to walk them.
I very much like that the book tries to cover all the needs of all types of traveller - from the student on a very tight budget, those with disabilities and those who want to perhaps splurge a bit on a special trip, meal, hotel etc

It's a very easy reference book to navigate through - well thought out with brilliant maps of the city and underground system.
I found that by reading it through before we travelled I was more inclined to see other sites of New York that I had not even previously considered.
I loved this book so much so that I felt compelled to take it with me everywhere I went in the city. The downside to that, is that it is a little heavy to lug around with you all day - maybe it could do with being a little smaller and lighter!
Would I recommend this to other first time visitors to New York? Yes, I would. Take my advice and get the most up to date copy available - in the "city that never sleeps" things are changing at a very rapid pace all the time

Great For Solo Travelling
Recently went to New York on my own. Bought a couple of travel books to hedge my bets.

This one had the best map and most up to date info (though phone ahead to some locations as they close on certain days).

There are some great 3D pictures of the various attractions in New York as well as general info. Each attraction has a grid ref to the map.

The info on the Tube isn't up to much, but wasn't in any of the books though there is a Tube map. Just ask the guards at the station - most people new to New York do not know how to use the Tube so you're not alone.

As I didn't want to carry a bag around New York I needed something which would fit in my coat pocket. This did perfectly. Easy to take out and refer to and then pop back. Far better than most of the tourists who use bigger books or paper maps which get damaged easily.

Great, chunky guide to NYC
This is a great guide and a huge amount of effort must have gone in to produce it. Visiting a city as big as NY can seem a little overwhelming, but with this book I soon managed to zero in on the sights which really interested me. The dozens of photos and street guides were the biggest bonus.

On the downside, the hotel recommendations weren't much help. They seemed aimed at students, families or luxury-lovers rather than single travellers like me. But I guess these days the Internet is best for choosing accomodation anyway. In short, a modern travel classic!
