Best Compact.
I am a very keen amateur photographer, and usually use a Nikon D200 plus various lenses, tripod etc.
However I always like to carry a compact with me every where I go. Preferably one that will fit into my jacket pocket.
The Coolpix 5100 is very compact and well designed. It has a metal alloy body and is very well built. 3X times optical zoom and 12 megapixels.
Bottom line, Resolution and definition is far better than I expected. You could easily enlarge to movie poster size, the detail is that good. It is surprisingly good at higher ISO's with little noise. 800 ISO is perfectly usuable. Full control including manual, easy menu system and great review screen. Battery life okay but not exceptional ( I bought a Spare and always take that with me.) Optical viewfinder is very useful. You can buy extra lens converters (wide angle and tele) but these are very expensive and not worth it in my opinion The 5100 also has a hotshoe that allows me to attach my SB800 flash, although the built in flash is generally more than adequate. I really like this camera, I own two other compacts (both Canon) and have owned other makes such as the Samsung NV7...YUK!
Overall this is the best of the bunch and is so good I can't see me changing it in the near future, I am seriously won over by it.
My only complaint is no RAW file facility (JPEG) only. But I am being picky I strongly recommend this camera and feel confident you will not be disappointed. BUY IT NOW!!!

If you know Nikon, you'll know this camera
I've had several Nikon SLR's, and one digital camera (Fuji). After a great deal of thinking, I got rid of the Fuji, it annoyingly enhanced almost every shot, making it impossible to capture the mood of the scene. I thought about a DLR - I've used them professionally, but what I really wanted was a good quality pocket camera. The P5100 is it! Feels great, magnesium metal case, rubber grips in the right places, but more importantly, it has a Program,Shutter priority,Aperture priority and Manual dial, exactly the same format as my SLR, I can replicate anything that I can do with my F80. I can capture any mood or lighting situation. The ability to custom set white-balance is also very useful. With 12.5 mpixels, and with an Epsom R800 printer I can make astonishing prints. If, like me, you dithererd over whether to go for a good, small, strong, reliable pocket camera, buy this one.

Amazing little camera
There's a huge amount of controversy flying about the net over this camera the main gist of which is why (oh why!) do manufacturers cram more and more pixels into tiny sensors producing very noisy (grainy) images. The P5100 has come in for it's fair share of kicking over this and, to be fair, it does become noisy around 400 ISO and very noisy at higher film speed equivalents but, cast your mind back to the days of film, when did you ever use 800 ISO film!? The main point for me is that at lower iso settings and in most of 'Auto' mode this camera takes absolutely stunning images with real sympathy to colour and tone - unlike the overproduced and lurid results in the Canon equivalents. it's also very easy to hold and navigate and can make you feel like you're a good photographer in minutes. The manual is on the cd of software supplied (Nikon's lip service to the enviroment) but if you contact nikon europe, they can send a hard copy manual. Don't be fooled by the raging comparisons with the Canon G9, this is a different camera, i think better designed. It is slower than the Canons and you might want to choose them if you photo kids and/or sport but, for beautiful imagery this one gets the cigar. 5 stars not because it's 'The Best' but because it does what it does beautifully.
