Giving professionals the freedom and control they need to operate effectively in the studio or in the field, the FL-36R flash unit enable flash photography minus the complication of cords and inconvenient set-ups. Control is possible directly from the camera without the need for cables. These units represent the ideal accompaniment to the Olympus E-3, which features a newly-developed RC Data Transfer System that transmits data optically. This significantly reduces the power consumption of the built-in flash when being used as the system commander. A wide range of flash-related settings can be easily accessed and adjusted using the camera's LCD panel as the user interface. Moreover, flash control is available in three groups, allowing flash mode and compensation settings to be set independently for each group - thus enabling ultra-precise illumination. Four remote control communication channels can be set by the user to avoid interference with other peripherals in the vicinity. Photographers also have the option to control wireless transmission distance by choosing between three signal strengths - for a range of up to 10m. The flash also incorporates an adjustable head which can be swivelled without impeding its ability to communicate

Using its' slave function, the FL-36R can also be used with other Olympus SLRs with manual flash facility and Olympus SP series cameras capable of slave mode operation. Furthermore, the flash unit can also be interlocked with a large strobe in the studio. The irradiation angle of the flash unit can be set either by automatic zooming according to the interchangeable lens used or manually. The best
Coupled with my Olympus E420, this is the best flash I have owned since my first Olympus camera + flash in 1977. To put it simply, it will handle any need for a flash-gun that an amateur photographer will encounter. You could add more power with its sister, the FL-50, but that's a choice you will make for yourself.

Using it with an Olympus E-series is simplicity itself, and, as long as you have made the right choices, like not forgetting the red-eye reduction, it will give you the right results. The build quality is exceptionally good.

Now I've been using it, a lot, I have to concede that the FL-36 is a whole lot better than my first Olympus flash. I thought the auto-zoom function would be less efficient than the rest. WRONG! It's absolutely brilliant! It's the degree of integration to my Olympus E420 that does it. Absolutely effective. (It's an E-system product, so it will do the same on any Olympus E-system camera.)

I've succeeded macro shots of shiny objects, bouncing the light off a wall or the ceiling, I've taken portraits indoors and out. Whatever genuine photographic test I've put it to, it has just sailed through.
