At last! a good simpsons game!
It is about time a good one was made, and this one is great fun! The voice acting uses all the real actors and the lines had me in stiches. What makes this game great for me is the fact that it is 2 player Co-operative with lots of Wii mini games that are good fun to play against a friend. In all, this is well worth the money in my eyes.
One of the most frustrating games I've ever played
'The Simpsons Game' had the potential to be a classic - it's been on TV for nearly 20 years, it has some of the best comedy that there has been for a long time and is made by games giant EA. Unfortunately, this game is just one big mess.
GAMEPLAY - 2/5
The first thing that you'll notice with this game is very flawed and frustrating controls. Just trying to do simple things such as jumps and attacks is incredibley tricky and will have you screaming at the screen when you are un-necessarily losing lives trying to just do a small jump, or having to re-do an entire section of the level as you've fell down off a platform. The missions are all "Go here. Get this", so do get boring fairly quickly. The only thing that kept me interested enough to play this for a significant amount of time is the hilarious Simpsons quotes and gags and the excellent cut-scenes. Also, exclusive to the Wii version, are bonus "Wii Moments" levels, where other famous EA games are given The Simpsons treatment. Unfortunatley (again) the controls let this down terribly, as they are just too unresponsive to enjoy any of it.
GRAPHICS - 4/5
One of the best things about this game are the incredible visuals. The whole of The Simpsons world is converted to 3-D but still manages to keep it's 2-D feel to it.. The characters look exactly like they do in the TV show (just more "solid" ). Plenty of colour and the graphics are very sharp, giving it a real cartoon feel.
SOUND - 5/5
All of the voices are all from the actors from the show, as is the music. So everything sounds just like it should and is very authentic and full of hilarious one-liners.
LIFESPAN - 3/5
If you can bear the irritating and nearly unplayable controls, there is tonnes to do and unlock. For a start there are 16 episodes to get through. Then there are the Wii Moments as well as lots of tokens to collect through each level. Otherwise this game won't last you longer than an hour or two as you will give up in frustration.
OVERALL - 2/5
A very poor attempt at bringing The Simpsons to consoles (again). All of the visuals and sounds are there but the actual gameplay is just so poor and the controls just make this game no fun to play at all. I'm not sure whether this is just an issue with the Wii vesion, but either way I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone, unless you have got extremely high tolerance levels!
Good and Bad
Okay, straight to the point. The Simpsons Game is not a fantastic game. It doesn't have the depth or challenge or originality required for it to be considered a great game. Take away the license and judge the game on its own merits and it is a strictly mediocre, seen-it-all-before, by-the-numbers platform game with weak puzzle elements.
However, it is still very much worth at least renting. The game looks like it was ripped straight out of the cartoon and is very funny throughout. The game actually used the real characters' voice actors in the game rather than just sound-a-likes and they even had the show's animators to draw some of the cutscenes. This game thrives on its humour and image, and they're both done beautifully and it almost makes up for the lacking gaming experience. Almost.
It is definitely worth a play if you're a Simpsons fan, which you must be or you wouldn't be looking at The Simpsons Game, right? I wouldn't say it was definitely worth a full price purchase, but if you could rent it for a week, borrow it off a friend who did buy it, or pick it up cheaply second hand, then you will have a good few hours of fun.
