Amazon.co.uk Review
The first lady of gaming returns in Tomb Raider - Underworld with her deepest and darkest adventure yet. Ostensibly searching for the mythical hammer of the Norse god Thor, the real draw of the game is exploring the underworlds of multiple different cultures.
A pair of panthers make an uncomfortable safety net |
When you're a tomb raider, exploring ancient tombs is all in a day’s work |
Lara’s pistols are no match for the kraken |
The Mediterranean level includes a huge area for swimming |
The basics of the game are classic Tomb Raider, as you explore the trap-filled interiors of ancient ruins using Lara’s famed acrobatic skills (and dual action pistols). From an underwater temple guarded by a giant octopus-like kraken to ancient Mayan structures in the South American jungle, she makes Indiana Jones look even older.
All of the levels are much larger than in previous games and far more interactive. You'll leave footprints in the sand and find all the scenery fully destructable. Every puzzle has multiple solutions, and the hand-to-hand combat system has been completely revamped. A new 3D map system also helps to ensure you never get lost so that you can concentrate on saving the world. Key Features- Dream vacation: Travel the world in search of ancient artefacts, from the steaming-hot jungles of Mexico to the frozen Arctic, from the coast of Thailand to the depths of the Mediterranean Sea.
- Think like Lara: An interactive, non-linear game world means anything that it looks like you should be able to pick up and use (or destroy) you can.
- Bettering Bond: An all new grappling hook, sonar map, scuba gear, a range of new weapons, and Lara’s trusty motorbike make her the best equipped adventurer in gaming.
- Help on demand: Receive as much or as little help as you want, from gentle nudges in the right direction to a full explanation of what you need to do next.
- Behind the scenes: All of Lara’s animations in the game have been fully motion captured from Olympic gymnast Heidi Moneymaker. Her voice is that of Spooks actress Keeley Hawes.
Based in the San Francisco bay area, the Crystal Dynamics team has been making games since 1992, including popular titles such as Pandemonium, Gex, and Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver. Crystal Dynamics began revammping the Tomb Raider series with Tomb Raider: Legend.
Manufacturer's Description

As she attempts to unravel the secrets behind these myths, Lara's perilous journey leads her toward a forgotten power that, if unleashed, could lay waste to all civilization.

Customer Reviews
Good story but let down by Wii graphics and far too short...
I have to admit that I was somewhat disappointed by Tomb Raider: Underworld. The graphics on the Wii are not particuarly brilliant; very annoying when all the trailers look considerably better thanks to coming from more powerful systems. I was clearly unaware of just how massive the gap was.
In terms of length, Underworld is far too short. I remember when Tomb Raider games took weeks. I cleared this in two days. Not worth the price tag really.
Also, there are plenty of bugs lurking in this game so I suggest saving frequently to avoid a lot of frustration when the graphics don't load and you have to reset.
I also missed the chance to run around Croft Manor like previous Tomb Raider games but the opening minutes of this game certainly explain why Lara's "humble abode" is absent. Nevertheless, it was just another dimension that was sadly missing from Underworld.
But let's not be entirely negative because I did love certain elements of this game. The story is very good and I loved all the details to myths - none of which I shall spoil here. Lara's past, which we have been following through Legend and Anniversary, is also dealt with nicely. Control-wise, Lara's new moves look beautiful. I just wish the game went on for longer so I could use them more!
The soundtrack is fantastic and the atmosphere in these dark, abandoned tombs is still quite creepy. Nice little touches that made this feel like a good old Tomb Raider game.
Lara herself appears to have had another slight makeover but Keeley Hawes remains and she is an absolutely perfect choice for the well-spoken Lara and I hope that, if there are future TR games, she remains.
Generally then, I do think this was a good game but they probably should've spent a little longer ironing out the bugs and adding to the gameplay. Lara has weapons for a reason after all!! Nevertheless, I did enjoy the two days I got out of it and hope that the next game is longer.
Fun for casual gamers
As a (very) casual gamer, I'm not looking for the best graphics the world has to offer, or the most perfect gameplay. I just want to have some fun, in a game that isn't so tricky that if I leave it for a week or two I can't pick it up again.
Tomb Raider: Underworld is, therefore, perfect for me. The manoevres are easier than Anniversary, the graphics are very pretty and it's not so hard I get frustrated by spending 30 mins pointlessly running around. If you're an experienced gamer you may not find it challenging enough, but I enjoy picking up and playing this occasionally without finding it too stressful. It's fun, hard enough to keep you interested, and the environments are very engaging and beautiful.
A great game for new Tomb Raider players.
I have always found Tomb Raider interesting, and I had a good go at doing Tomb Raider 3 but unfortunately I was about 10 then so I found it very difficult. I just saw this game and bought it on impulse as I thought I would enjoy it.
Logging on to the internet before starting I was a little put back by the negative reviews on here - I simply don't understand them playing the game. The game is fun, the graphics are not revolutionary but they are simply fine, the gameplay is fun with the wii stick and generally I haven't found it as hard as the other ones. As stated in the title, it is the perfect Tomb Raider game for beginners who are not looking for a near impossible game that the majority of previous Lara Croft games have been.
