By now, we all know that we gain fat when we take in more calories than we burn. But we're not always rational creatures when it comes to food. Venuto provides a sound plan that will help us put the brakes on overeating by pinpointing the mental roadblocks and emotional eating patterns that are preventing us from losing weight for good. Guiding readers to dig deeper, The BODY FAT SOLUTION explores: · Why it is so difficult to balance calorie output with input · What prevents people from eating appropriately and exercising more · The emotional and psychological factors that sabotage success Tom Venuto reminds us that calories do count! But THE BODY FAT SOLUTION is neither super low carb nor super low fat, and he steers clear of demonising entire food groups. Instead, Venuto shows how to personalize an eating plan that takes into account your unique metabolism and calorie needs. He then presents workout programs to maximize the success of the diet plan that are fast and efficient, enabling you to quickly achieve your goal of replacing fat with lean muscle. Tapping into his years of training expertise and personal experience, Venuto helps readers change their relationship with food, empowers them to take charge of their lives, and delivers a programme that promises dramatic and permanent results.

Don't be fooled by the three stars - a good start!
I came across Tom's work while looking on the internet for tips on how to rid myself of fat on my legs. I've lost over 3 stone in weight but need to shift fat on the stubborn lower areas - bum and legs.
I bought this, looking for a 'not diet' book and it's genuinely NOT a diet book. If you've bought into the 'expert' and often spouted rubbish that only a diet high in carbohydrates and low in fat is the way to go, be prepared to think again. (I already knew about that, by the way). These are the strategies that top bodybuilders have used for decades to become lean AND healthy. And it also explores other issues which will aid and sabotage your progress too. Be prepared to do some reading and thinking first - you won't get diet recipes here. If you're looking for a book to dive straight into, or a simple 'follow this and you'll get results immediately' approach you won't find it here. Quick fix addicts should just not bother. If you're prepared to think and take a critical look at your life, and implement changes stage by stage, then this will work for you.
I am about to set to and craft my long term, medium term and short term goals, set out priorities for what will really help me shift the last 10 lbs, and devise a weight training programme to fill the gaps in my already pretty healthy lifetsyle.
Where this book falls down is that it does not give you any 'starting point' charts for assessing your favourite (comfort) foods and why you like them, training charts, menu planners, actual eating charts and such like. Suggestions are made but to have an appendix with basic tools would have been a superb addition. Also there are no recipes - though the book is already reasonably thick to begin with. However it might have been good to include a selection showing how Tom's programme would pan out in the kitchen.
So that's why the book only gets three stars from me. I now have to find some appropriate low carb and low GI books to fill in the gaps.
This not a diet book. It's a brain and body training book which gives you some new insights and the tools to create a new lifestyle. Tom's very clear that the end of the weight loss is just the beginning, but he also gives some help on maintenance too.
If you're a thinker, and a doer, AND are serious about making lifestyle changes, then this is for you. If you're looking for a quick fix, or someone telling you 'do this', then it's not.
A comprehensive, sane solution to overfat & unfit
This is a terrific and comprehensive approach to sensible fat-losing and fitness-building. Not about quick fixes, or about giving "off the shelf" solutions such as menu planners (how on earth would *he* know what you like eating?), this is much more about learning and applying practical and proven principles which lead to sustainable fat burning:
*Fit food - balanced, nutritious, realistic
*Cardio - how much and how often
*Strength training - how to do it to build your strength and metabolism
*Overcoming emotional eating & exercise procrastination - great coaching and NLP techniques in easy to understand language
*Creating support from those around you.
Good job!
Great book! I would give it 1,000 stars if I could :)
I am a fan of fitness, I work out 6 days a week intensely and on the other day am extremely active as well. I am always searching for better ways to do things with my work outs, workout plans, eating, etc. I came across this book by accident when someone wrote about it in their blog and raved about how good it was. That was all it took for me! I ordered it. I read it from front to back cover and will do so again and again. There is so much useful information in it you couldn't possibly absorb all of it in just one read, and I really have that desire :)
It has great advice on how to get motivated and stay motivated, what foods are good for building muscle and burning fat, work out plans, the best support system for your journey, maintaining your life style and on and on and on! I LOVE this book! I can't say enough good things about it, I have learned so much from it I tell everyone to get a copy now.
I have read other books by different authors on how to stay fit and healthy what the proper diet is etc etc. All had useful chunks of information, but NONE of them covered the subject as thoroughly and with as much good advice as this book. It is on the top of the list now when people ask me what I recommend.
