Manufacturer's Description
Nowadays, people are constantly on the move. In an increasingly mobile world, people rely more and more on personal navigation products as a vital tool to facilitate mobility. With illuminated maps and voice-guidance systems, personal navigation products are a natural transition to paperless navigation. Getting directions has never been so stress-free. GPS (Global Positioning Systems) navigation systems give you spot-on navigation, wherever you are and are as easy to use as a mobile phone. And if you need to re-route your journey - to avoid congestion, road works or traffic accidents - GPS navigation systems can do this for you automatically.
Easy to Install and Use:;TomTom has leveraged its expertise to make TomTom GO the easiest to install and the easiest to use navigation device ever. With TomTom GO there is no need for a set-up linked to a PC - in fact no technical knowledge is needed at all. It fits easily into the included car mounting kit, which is simply mounted on your car windshield or dashboard. It could not be easier to use: just turn it on and users can instantly access all the software, maps and colour 3D navigation views, as well as voice-guided instructions in a choice of languages.
By using TomTom GO's unique touch screen activation there is no hassle with multiple buttons or extra hardware when calculating your route. The touch screen is completely intuitive and your route can be planned with just a few taps on the screen.
At the end of the journey, simply turn TomTom GO off with the click of one button then pop it in your bag. There has never been a faster or easier way to navigate your way to where you have to, or want to go.
Uninterruped Navigation:;TomTom GO features a built-in GPS receiver that provides unprecedented new levels of satellite navigation using the latest hardware and software available on the market. The intuitive interface is focused, extremely legible and omits extraneous details.;TomTom GO's enhanced, CD-quality speaker volume provides crystal clear sound that allows you to hear the voice instructions above the noise of the engine.

Lost no more!
I am hopeless at directions, and am always getting lost. I had tried PDA based GPS solutions, but found they required far more patience to set up than I obviously have; other 'stand alone' GPS systems were simply too expensive to consider. It was with a little cynicism that I read the claims of the 'Tomtom Go' to work straight from the box - but that is precisely what it did! Within half an hour of receiving this I was able to use it. The menus are easy to use - including entering starting and finishing points. There is a vast range of choices which can be made to customise the 'points of interest' that appear on the maps and screen view - but these do not overwhelm the user, nor are they particularly essential. Other choices available include the directional voice commands, and day/night view. The product itself is large enough to be useful, but small enough to be no problem when driving. I used this to take me from the village where I live into South Manchester - a journey involving country roads, motorways and city traffic. This was to be a real test of the capabilities of the system. I found the directions were clear, and gave plenty of warning for turnings and motorway exits; even when I did take a wrong turning it effortlessly recalculated my route.
One slight criticism is that the system is operated by touching the screen. The result of this is that the screen very quickly becomes smeared, and can be difficult to see. To prevent this either a screen saver and/or a stylus can be very useful. All in all a very good product at an incredible price when compared to other stores and similar products. I have no hesitation in recommending this.
Magic!
I've bought lots of odds and ends on Amazon and other sites over the years, but this item is the first one to prompt me to write a review and share my thoughts. This product is simply, magic. Arriving with a full battery charge you simply unpack it and away you go. Well designed, well laid out and a fraction of the price of a factory fitted Sat Nav system. Spend a bit of time syncing some additional point of interest off the web and you can navigate straight to any of hundreds, probably thousands of places.
The day I bought it I let it guide me home from work by an alternate route to avoid a long tail back. Although I'd forgotten about a speed camera on this route, the Tom Tom Go reminded me in plenty of time (you download these as POIs). Not that I was driving fast, but on a dark and unfamiliar road it would have been easy to miss the camera and glide past at 36mph!
If you do anything other than a limited amount driving, then a Tom Tom is a must.
TomTom is it for you?
Just like the ad says, you take TomTom out of the box and its navigating you to a destination of your choice within 10 minutes.
Having had mine now for a week I am totally happy with its performance.
If all you want is the simplest way to prevent you from ever getting lost again this is it.
I was a bit worried about some of the adverse comments I had read like:
1. It reflects the light and is too difficult to see
In both my Mondeo and Discovery this has not been a problem. I use it for long motorway journeys as well as getting around town. I have set the schematic (map display) to change to a dark background at 60 mph so I am not tempted to keep watching it! As a result, at or above this speed all that is displayed is a direction indicator and a mileage to your next instruction plus of course you get the voice prompts which mean you dont even need to look at the screen.
2. Dirty fingermarks on the screen
The TomoTom comes with a screen protector on. I have just left this on and each time I remove from the car (after every trip)I give it a quick wipe which is fine.
3. Is potentially confusing with instructions if you take a wrong turn.
I have taken wrong turns many times on purpose and TomTom instantly recalculates the best route to take without me having to do anything. Nothing confusing whatsoever
The only problem I have found with it is that at one particular roundabout that I knew quite well, the voice prompt and the icon both told me to turn left (1st exit) whereas I knew and the screen map confirmed that I should turn right ( 4th exit). You can report errors such as this and I assume they will be fixed on subsequent releases of the software.
Would I buy this device again if it was lost or stolen?
Absolutely definitely
