best overview and introduction to TOTO currently available
Several TOTO compilations have been available for the past years. Most of them were poorly compiled or suffered from both uninteresting bonus material and weak sound (especially the erratic "Past to Present"). The "Essential Toto" gets it almost right: The double disk version covers all phases of the band selecting their best songs from their studio records and gains additional points for sound quality. There a few miss outs most regrettable the fine instrumental "Anthem" from their debut, but the overall selection of songs is OK and representative of their oeuvre. The compilation allows not only to listen to the songs TOTO is best known for (from their self-tiled debut and the Grammy-loaded VI), but showcases also more recent efforts, some of which (especially songs from XX and Tambu) despite less airplay and chart success compare well to their old material from their most successful period in the 80's. . Another minor regret is the track order. Why can't anyone provide a chronological order of songs on a collection that is meant to illustrate the history and thus the musical evolution of a band? In summary: The 2CD edition of "Essential Toto" is by far the best overview and introduction to TOTO currently available with respect to both sound quality and selected tracks.

I am really glad i found this album, Toto are a class act!
Have you ever heard a singer or group and thought, 'take away the lead
singer or a particular aspect and they would be awesome.' Well with Toto you don't have to, you have excellent musicians and great vocals and with 32 songs on one album you really are spoilt for choice.
I first heard of Toto on the brilliant compilation album 'American Heartbeat' and had forgotten them until someone reviewed the same album as me and i saw the list of other albums he liked.
'Rosanna', 'Hold the line' and 'Africa' are all fantastic songs, but when you add to these 'I won't hold you back', 'I'll be over you', 'Home of the brave' and the anthem '2 Hearts' then you know that you have something really special.
Yes, there are weaker songs (mainly on the second disk) ,but if you are looking to fill 1hour 30 minutes of this groups inspirational music on a tape then boy you will have a headache trying to fit your favourite 20 songs on it. You will not regret buying this album.

The Essential Toto
Based on the previous feedback, I purchased this CD and certainly have not been disappointed. An excellent selection of songs and a must for all Toto fans.
