Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
In a nutshell:
The surprise hit of 2005 is back and this time it’s moved on from the prequels and onto "proper" Star Wars. It may sound like one of the worst excesses of marketing hell but this is good enough to rejuvenate your love for both video games and Star Wars (and Lego)!

The lowdown:
As ridiculous as the idea sounds this is one of the few games that really can be played by all ages, from tots to grandparents – the game even adjusts its difficultly level on the fly depending how well you’re doing. The graphics are absolutely hilarious as the game pokes gentle fun at all the films and characters and uses the Lego motif so you can build new structures and objects as you go. With more playable characters than ever each now has their own special move, such as Chewbacca’s ability to pull the arms off Stormtroopers, and you can get in and out of vehicles whenever you want in some levels.

Most exciting moment:
The game features a large number of vehicles to drive, including landspeeders and AT-STs. You can also ride a Dewback which excretes an ominous looking brown Lego stud if you press a button...

Since you ask:
The all important two player co-op mode from the first game is still in the sequel, plus you can now design your own characters out of component Lego pieces. Darth Greedo, anyone?

The bottom line:
The Force is strong with this one.

The force is not strong with this one!1
I have just purchased this game for the DS and played it for 48 hours straight! It has been a long time since a game has gripped me so much that I literally couldn't put it down - Shallow? Sure! Fun? You bet! so why only a one star rating? Well read on.....

Just like the umpteen other versions, Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy for the Nintendo DS is a kid-friendly action adventure game that depicts the exploits of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo out of plastic Lego bricks. The DS game retains much of the irreverent charm and play variety that its console and PC counterparts have, and it also flaunts some of the most detailed 3D objects I've yet seen out of the handheld. Fans and nonfans alike will appreciate that there are plenty of blaster fights and lightsaber battles to take part in, and there are even levels devoted to controlling Lego-constructed renditions of the Millennium Falcon and other familiar vehicles. True to its title, the game lets you experience firsthand a number of key scenes from Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. In all, there are 16 missions. Approximately two-thirds of them involve running around on foot, shooting or hacking away at Imperial forces, and solving whatever puzzles you happen to come across.

The gameplay itself is, truthfully, fairly standard for this type of action game, but the variety of things to do, coupled with the Star Wars subject matter and Lego-inspired madness, prevents it from ever feeling too monotonous and it oozes that "just one more go" factor.

So everything sounds great, right? Unfortunately, it's not. The game has many, many bugs. Thankfully, the game is designed so that these issues don't always get in the way of completing missions, but I still grow bitter every time I have to quit the game & restart because a character has got "stuck" in absolutely nothing!!! Sometimes CPU allies can fall through walkways and skid to their deaths, and depending on their respawn location, they may get stuck in an infinite loop of death and revival. Sometimes you are lucky and can generally inch your way out of trouble but sometimes you realise that the only option you have to switch the machine off and on again! Yet there it is - There IS something about this game that keeps me coming back time and time again, even if I'm frustrated.

Perhaps now you can appreciate why I gave the game 5 stars for fun yet 1 star for a rating? Even one star is extremely generous considering the sorry state that this title was released in! This sort of practice is pretty bad when it happens in a PC game (which can then be fixed via a patch after a few weeks), but to do it with a DS game (that can't be repaired later) is inexcusable.

If you think you can stand the barrage of glitches and occasionally having to quit and restart stages, then WILL have fun. Of course, by buying it, you're also telling LucasArts that it's okay for it to release games that are clearly unfinished.

Very poor game1
Please don't whatever you do buy this game for Nintendo DS. It is full of faults and glitches. I was impressed with the previous game for GBA and pre-ordered the Star wars II game for my DS. I am halfway through it and have stopped playing not because it too hard or too simple but because it is full of bugs. Characters disappear mid scene, as does parts of the scenery, you enter scenes and they lock up and you have to reboot. Once you have unlocked a level and go back to play it in Freeplay mode whole rooms etc disappear. The point view camera is also very annoying sometimes it pans out to an angle that makes the game un-playable. I thought all this was my copy being faulty but I found lots of similar reviews on online forums. It is a real shame as underneath there is good game but it is made unplayable by being rushed to shops and poorly tested. So once again do not by this game

A game put together like LEGO1
I enjoyed to quirky nature of the first game and thought it would be an excellent addition to my DS collection. How could a be so so so wrong!

Don't get me wrong the game concept is still fantastic and I do intend to buy a console version - however, the execution by the developers is incredibly poor, the game is full of bugs making it almost unplayable. I'm not sure what the game testers were doing but I don't think they were playing the same game as me. Characters disappear, the camera tracking is truly awful often losing sight of your playable character and it isn't unusual for large parts of the background to blackout.

A great game concept coded in an appalling manner - save you money or at least don't buy this for a few months until they fix it.
