Customer Reviews
Great phone whether or not you want the extra features (MP3 player, internet)
If you're already a Nokia person, you can skip this paragraph: but new readers should start here. This phone has a straightforward menu system that's easy to use and reasonably quick to get the hang of. Making calls is straightforward, sending text messages is straightforward, receiving calls and texts is straightforward, navigating the menus is pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it. The predictive text is good when you finally work out how to switch it on (hold down the options button and keep holding)) and is reasonably clever about punctuation. Sound quality on calls is pretty good. It works well with my bluetooth headset but I haven't tested it with a speaker-phone type setup.
Now, if you just wanted a phone, it's enough to read the above paragraph or just say "It's Nokia". It's a phone! It works! If you didn't want the internet browser and MP3 player features, you need never notice they are there. They won't bother you.
If you do want an internet connection - this one is excellent. The phone supports the Opera Mini internet browser (came installed on my phone, but I had to contact customer services of my phone company to get it connected). The font is tiny *but* the quality of the screen is so high you can still read it. It's easier to read than the same size font on paper. Of course, there's not much room for photos etc, but if you want to read mainly text (e.g. the mobile phone versions of Facebook, BBC News etc) then this is great. There is also a perfectly good built-in internet browser but you won't use it once you've got Opera Mini working.
This is also a high quality MP3 player. The supplied headphones aren't brilliant - I wonder if that is why some reviews say the sound quality is poor? With my own (fairly ordinary) headphones, the sound is very good, better than my exisiting MP3 player. You do need headphones though - the sound is a bit tinny when playing out loud. It is also pretty easy to move music onto the memory card from your computer (or another phone). Don't bother installing the software on your computer - just plug it in to the USB port and copy files in Windows Explorer or Mac "Finder" or whatever. (Tip for Mac users: when deleting files through Finder, be sure to 'empty trash' before unplugging.) Easier still is sending files by Bluetooth, if your computer has a Bluetooth option.
(You can also use any of your MP3 files as your ring tone or message alert.)
Minor niggles : the predictive text sometimes offers the most unlikely word first ("Nun" before "Mum", "Ticky" but not "Vicky"). The "Favourite recipient" feature for addressing text messages helps if you always send texts to the same person but is a minor nuisance if you have more than one friend in your life. The MP3 player volume control only has about half a dozen levels - not much subtlety for choosing the volume that's loud enough for you but quiet enough for others in the room. Probably best to buy headphones with their own volume control built in.
Finally, the phone is (unusually for a Nokia) slim and 'good-looking', if these things matter to you. It is actually more compact than the folding edition of the same phone (5300) and makes most phones look like bricks.
I LOVE IT !!!! but it has a few nigles
Feb 08:- I got the phone after returning the Sony-Ericsson W810i (so many issues and problems, I gave up with that one)
Pros:- (1) plays native Windows WMA music files (the Sony Ericsson didn't and if you have a PC it's a nightmare converting them) (2) Very slim (3) looks great (4) easy to set up and use (5) texting and predictive texting is great (the best I've used) so easy (6) the PMA synch works 100%, calender, to do list, contacts everything (I use Outlook) (7) 2GB standard card is great I loaded about 30 Albums on it) (8) the screen and resolution is excellent (9) the 3 dedicated music keys are a fantastic idea (10) I really like the way you can connect the USB, power and headphones all at the same time (couldn't do that with the W810i) (11) "Flight mode" was easy and you don't need to switch on and off to use (unlike the W810i)
Cons:- (1) The earpiece that came with the phone was rubbish, I had to buy a better one (an extra £25) why couldn't they supply such a high quality phone with a high quality ear piece ? Nokia are soon bringing out the WH-700 earpiece (which they really should supply as standard with this phone) (2) not sure if it's the earpiece but the music quality doesn't seems as good as the Sony_Ericsson's (maybe the frequency range is higher) and is a bit crackly (especially when jumping tracks) (3) If I disconnect from the USB and reconnect Windows Media Player will not see the phone again and I have to reboot recognise it again (very irritating) (4) the software on the CD kept running video clips (even though I kept telling it to "Skip" (even when you close it) all very irritating and time wasting (I really don't want to see people jumping around with their 5310 for 2 minutes every time I try and do something with the CD) (5) the micro USB port on the phone is a real fiddle (it's in the wrong place (should be at the bottom or on the side of the phone not at the top and right next to the earpiece socket) the cover should be rubber and not hard plastic) and getting the USB plug in is very fiddly
Don't let any of my "Cons" stop you from getting this phone (nothing is perfect) and the pros outweigh the cons enormously.
March 08:- I finally bit the bullet and bought a Bluetooth adapter for my PC which works well with the 5310.
April 08: I also bought the WH-700 earpiece, BRILLIANT (cost me £30, why couldn't they supply one as standard (the other one went straight in the bin)
May: 08- I updated the firmware on my phone and "Nokia PC Suite" on my PC yesterday and all the Windows Media Player Synch problems have been fixed,
Everything now works a dream !!!!!!!!!
great phone
I use this as my work phone and it never lets me down. Its slim, really easy to use and amazing for texting. The camera goes slow after you take a picture, but apart from that there's not much wrong with it. I used sony earphones with the music player and its pretty good - as is the 2gb card which lets you put quite a few songs on there.
Overall I think its really good value for money. Would like to get my hands on a blue one.
