I love my P990i
I have had this phone now for nearly 2 years. For Christmas my husband bought me the SciPhone i68 which is an Apple iPhone lookalike. I admit that after 3 weeks I have hidden it in the drawer and brought out my trusty P990 after missing it for the full 3 weeks. I like the sturdiness of Sony Ericsson phones anyway and this model replaced my P900 which was also fantastic. I find it easy and fun to use. It has a number pad on the front which flips down to show a small qwerty keyboard underneath which, although the keys are small, I can manage to use without a problem. It stores everybody's addresses (which to me is an essential part of using my mobile) and has intuitive menus. It is a great phone to pick up and tinker with, without the need for reading a hefty great manual to find out how to make a call or store a number.
The only real downside that I have discovered is the photo quality is not great. You can buy plenty of cheaper phones on the market with better cameras, however I have a camera for that and only rarely use the camera facility. Whether that would be different if it did have a better camera, I don't honestly know.
Some people also comment that I have a house brick in my bag, but I think it's a thing of beauty and if I had to carry my address book with me as well, it would take up a whole lot more space!
One of the best phones around
The SonyEricsson P990i is one the best phones around.
I know that the iPhone is great on the touchscreen, but it does not have a real keyboard (the touchscreen keyboard is annoying to use and it is easy to hit neighbouring keys). And the Blackberry has a keyboard, but it does not have touchscreen.
And both phones don't have a Numberic Keypad. This is the great thing about the SonyEricson P990i. It has a numeric keyboard and then when you flip out and you has a full Qwerty Keyboard. Also, there is a rollerwheel on the side for navagation. And if that is not enough, you have a stylus, so you can make hand written notes and also if you choose use for navigation.
So why did the iPhone and Blackberry become bigger hits?. More down to marketing and hype.
As for all the Apple Apps, well they have been selling apps for the P990i for ages (based on Symbian operating system - the same operating system is used in the Nokia smartphones also).
I have had the P990i for a while and it has been a solid reliable phone. I certainly would not change to the Apple iPhone 3G or any of the Blackberry.
For instance, the blackberry still does not have an FM RDS radio, whilst this Sony has had it for a long time. So when I go jogging, I can listen to my music or listen to the radio.
The iPhone has had problems, with the phone not working etc....
The P990i is a mature product (previous editions were P800, P900, P910i).
And they have refined the product the P990i, for instance it has cover for the camera lens. Also has a dual camera for video calling etc... and it supports 3G.
It also comes built-in with Word, Excel and PDF readers etc...
There are tons of feature on the P990i.
Also, there is a desk stand in the box, so you can keep your phone charging via USB.
There are lots of Apps for the P990i, but perhaps SE did not promote them as much as Apple. It also has a memory slot (by the way the phone takes MemoryStick Duo Pro, but I managed to use the smaller M2 flash on 4GB).
Though, I would welcome if the SonyEricson brought out a newer edition of the P990i. As far as I am concerned, the P990i has everything, but if they included GPS, DAB radio (digital radio), slightly better UI (like Apple), built-in Skype (you can get fring for free), built-in facebook, twitter apps and faster processor for better internet experience. But don't change anything else!
BRILLIANT!
A brilliant Phone & PDA!
Very user friendly, very sturdy, it looks good and more to the point, it does everything it says on the bloody box and loads more!
