Customer Reviews

how did this get such bad reviews in the press?4
I think the amount of reviews left for this game on amazon in comparison to just about anything else shows how much it has been affected by bad press. Not one single computer mag had anything good to say about it and that surprises me because like the few people who've reviewed it here I found the game to be very enjoyable.

The setting is brilliant - giant monsters running around trashing cities and tearing people limb from limb - give me some of that over aliens or world war 2. In terms of gameplay its slick and responsive, plus the weapons are pretty meaty and varied (forget about blowing off a werewolfs head with a shotgun - towards the end of the game you get to use a heavy calibre machinegun to make instant stew of their noggin).

It looks good considering there is often a hectic amount happening on screen and the setpieces (as mentioned by reviewers before me) are suitably awesome. So why was this game given a kicking?

Is it because it doesn't revolutionize first-person-shooters? that doesn't stand up as an arguement when you consider no other game is doing anything radically different (and everybody moans about space marines this and space marines that yet when a game comes along that does away with all that generic stuff they then compare it to Halo etc). Is it because this is the company that made Turning Point which wasn't great, so the reviewers didn't even bother to play this game before they gave it such rubbish scores?

I have a theory - Atari didnt bribe them enough money to overinflate their scores so a decent game like this gets rated poorly whilst (moderately)overhyped disappointments like Halo 3, Gears of War and Deadspace all get much higher marks. Its the only reason I can think of that explains why a game that is doing no more or less than those other games gets such a vastly different score yet provides just as much entertainment.

And for my last point that will probably infuriate people (if anyone actually reads this): the makers of Deadspace ought to look at this game for a few tips as it made me jump more times than the supposed scariest game on Xbox360 did.

Great set pieces and straight forward action make and entertaining blaster.4
Overall the graphics aren't a patch on gears of war 2's, but then what is? The scale of some of the set peices is staggering and the game presents a many awe inspiring moments. Ok the game is pretty linear, but then so is GOW2, it's no bad thing. the checkpoints are well spaced out and the pace of the game is excellent.
After playing this I amazed at the poor reviews this game got at the time of release, scores between 2/10 and 5/10 are way off the mark.
I can see some of the criticisms levelled at the game but many do not detract from the game, or at least not to any great extent.
To sum up legendary is a linear shooter with a huge scale and ambitious set pieces. The graphics are good and the sound is solid with some decent music.
It may not be the next halo or bioshock but it is a good fun blaster that impresses more than I expected. Well worth looking into as the price has dropped.

Romptacular!4
This is an old fashioned FPS in a lot of ways. There's no vehicle sections and although there are team mates, they're mostly just there to get killed. The story is nonsense and the levels are linear.

However, it's an exceedingly enjoyable romp. The monsters look amazing and are constantly jumping out of unexpected places, smashing the scenery, running along walls etc.

There's a very neat magic system - you get magic out of dead enemies and can use it to blast them if they come too close or heal yourself when you're in trouble.

the weapons are all excellently meaty and the set-pieces are epic (the Kraken smashing up the houses of parliament is very dramatic).

Maybe you could wait until the price comes down, but I don't think you'll go wrong buying this if you want an exciting, un-complicated FPS where you shoot the heads off werewolves with a shotgun I don't think you could do any better.
