Customer Reviews

N73 - Excellent for GPS, music, music recordings and video4
I've had this phone for 18+ months and have had a lot of success with it.

Firmware: V4.0747.31.0.1

Good points:

1) GPS: It doesn't have a built in GPS module, but I bought an external bluetooth one for £32, which has an excellent battery life (> 1 week of daily use), and which can live in your coat pocket/rucksack/car etc. In some ways it is better than having the GPS in the phone because it doesn't lose position when you put the phone in your pocket. I've got ViewRanger (with 25K OS maps for all my walking and cycling areas), SmartGPS (good for scanned maps), Nokia Maps (for road routing), GoogleMaps (good if you are walking in the dark!) and Geocache navigator. I use these on a daily basis and the N73 runs them very well. The screen is probably quite small for older eyes, but even so is just about good enough to use as a car GPS. The screen back light uses so little power that you can leave it on for hours (e.g. a whole day's walking/cycling) which is much better than having to keep pressing buttons to see where you are and where you should go.

2) Music: I've loads of mp3 and aac tracks (mainly own recordings) which the N73 plays very well through the built in stereo speakers - easily to room volume (better than my laptop...).

3) Music recordings: The N73 records in mono, but even so I often use it to record (own) music performances to get a good idea of how they sounded. To create a music recording, I make a video and then strip off the video using some Sony video editing software.

4) Video recordings: These are excellent for general use. Each video clip can be 1 hour long! A higher resolution would have been nice, as the quality is not really good enough to transfer to DVDs for playing on TVs.

5) Good battery life - certainly several days of normal use.

6) Phone signal sensitivity - good. I've had very few problems with voice or 3G signal strength.

7) I've had no crashes at all.

Bad points:

1) Slowness. The user interface lags behind key presses. The best thing to do is to wait until it catches up with you. When you have owned the phone a while you know how long things take and just wait (the slowest action is switching the camera on, which takes several seconds).

2) The web browser can report "Out of memory". This can be really annoying. I've not found a way around it.

3) The electrical contacts an the camera cover are poor, and can cause the phone to keep switching between front and back camera. I've just replaced the complete case on my N73 (as the old one got scratched), and the new contacts are fine.

The screen gets scratched by money and keys in your pocket, but:
a) You can use a Martin Fields screen protector, which work really well.
b) You can replace the entire case (see ebay). It's not too difficult if you are careful, and the result is a brand new phone.

Although the slowness put me off when I first got it, I'm now quite found of it.

What an utter waste of time and money1
I have had this phone for a year now. It worked very well for the first three months. Since then it has problems displaying basic text messages, it constantly resets itself, switches itself off and disconnects from calls and the internet with no intervention and freezes on the screensaver for (at the longest count when I was very bored) as long as 4 hours and approxiamtely 37 minutes.

The only reason I have not disposed of this UTTER waste of money is that I can't afford a new phone. More effective as a door stop than a piece of mobile communication equiment.

AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.
