Customer Reviews

Fantastic guide5
Before I bought this book there were loads of other customer reviews (don't know why there are none today) with varied opinions - quite a few negative ones, so I ended up buying the Eyewitness Travel guide and the AA spiral guide instead. Whilst the Eyewitness book is lovely to look at having so many colour photos and th AA book is a handy size, I have to say that I ended up buying the Lonely Planet guide as well as it has far more detailed information about the island eg history, costs, restaurants, just everything really. It is written by someone who has tried and tested all that the island has to offer and its detailed reviews entice you to go and try for yourself. It really is a far more superior guide, though admittedly not so attractive to look at.

A good guide.4
The shame about this book is the lack of pictures to put with all the described places. Everything else is very good and useful. Its tells of the history, culture and public holidays of Cyprus and contains lots of maps and tourist information. It also has a menu reader and contains a dictionary and phrases in both Greek (for the South) and Turkish (for the North).

In need of an update3
NOTE DECEMBER 2009: Just going from the picture on the cover of a girl eating a water melon (I no longer have this book), this review is for the earlier version (version 3) of the book. There is a newer version with a cover picture of an historical site, and this is likely to be more up to date. The original review appears below of the "water melon" version...

ORIGINAL REVIEW
===============

I bought this book before going to Cyprus for a two week holiday in June 2009.

Although it appears to give good information, it is now significantly out of date. A straw poll of the resturants that we tried to use found only about half of them still in existance.

The prices given are in Cyprus pounds, although the country started using the Euro a couple of years ago. Even when you do convert the prices, they are woefully wrong and, as a rule of thumb, you should consider adding 20% to every price quoted.

Obviously the historical information is still accurate (history hasn't been re-written in Cyprus, unlike some other countries) and the information about places to visit still gives you some good ideas of where to go and what to see.

So, on balance, only three stars for this guide.
