In 1974 the Greek colonels ousted the Greek-Cypriot leader of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, and Turkey retaliated by invading and seizing a third of the island. Cyprus remains split in two, like Berlin before the wall came down, bristling with troops and spying bases, and permanently policed by the United Nations. Henry Kissinger claimed he could do nothing to stop the coup because of the Watergate crisis, but this book presents evidence to support the view that it was no failure of American foreign policy, but the realization of a long-term plot. The authors describe the strategic reasons for Washington's need to divide the island. Their account encompasses an international cast of characters that includes Eden, Eisenhower, Nixon, Kissinger, Wilson, Callaghan, Grivas, and the leaders of the two halves of the divided island, Clerides and Denktas.

An excellent in depth and objective research.
Cyprus, a beautiful small island has always been the victim of its strategic geographical location on the international political scene, while this works to its advantage on the economic side. If ever the two factors ever find their equilibrium the people of the island irrespective of national, cultural, religious and other differences will prosper.
The detailed analysis of events and plots are ecellent. At the end of the day one realizes that it is the prevailing peripheral circumstances and interests that really dictate the fortunes of the core.
It is a great piece of work. I thought I knew a few things about the Cyprus problem until a read this book.

A true revelation!
I have read a number of books on the Cyprus Problem. As a Greek Cypriot, I restricted myself to reading books from Greek and Greek-Cypriot historians and politicians.

However, nothing can possibly prepare anyone for the revelations this book makes. It explains how and why the Cyprus Partition had been pre-planned by Western Powers in the line-up for the Cold War and also explains the Greek-Cypriot, Turkish and Greek conflict.

I believe that this book should be read by everyone who is interested on a broader picture of the Middle East Crisis and to find out how and why Cyprus is now (and will remain to be so) one of the only remaining divided countries in the World.

Gripping account of global power politics
I remember the Turkish paratroops invading and know a bit about Cyprus, and visitied. If you're like me, you'll find this book a gripping read. The events leading up to the 1974 invasion are told with absolute clarity and brevity.The revelations are fascinating and plausible. Perhaps the book leans towards the Turkish position but it accounts for all sides of the story.It does not over-speculate but keeps to the facts, many relating to the invasion are newly uncovered. Still very relevant and a fascinating insight into global politices
