Customer Reviews
Long live Budgie Bird!
Since the advent of DVD, "Budgie" has been my most eagerly awaited release. It has always been one of my favourite TV shows, and something that has been ignored by British TV for many years. I recorded the most recent repeat showings, which was now over twenty years ago, and I have watched the tapes many times over the years. The release of the first series is a dream come true, and after watching all of the episodes, I deposited my VHS tapes in the dustbin! If one single thing were to be used to highlight the talents of the late, great Adam Faith, then "Budgie" it would be. Ronald Bird was a dream character, and one that Adam Faith played wonderfully. In addition to him, the supporting cast are great, all of the parts however small are very well written. I hope series two will follow shortly.
Budgie - 36 years on and Budgie is as great as ever.
Like Minder, Fools & Horses and Just Good Friends? - Yes - then watch Budgie because this series must have provided the raw material for later TV hits such as these.
Watching Budgie series 1 & 2 again feels weird after all this time - but it was well worth the wait and it's just as good as I remember it. Adam Faith was truly great in this part. If Adam hadn't had a near fatal car accident after filming series 2 then others would have doubtless followed.
Gets rather repetitive
Blimey, was it really that long ago? I was shocked that the first three episodes were in Black & White - I thought there was something wrong with the DVD!!
Perhaps we were less critical then or maybe Waterhouse and Hall didn't try hard enough. The tedious Grandee Hotel episode is completely out of place and looks it like was adapted from a rejected Play for Today.
After a while all the episodes seem the same. Adam Faith and the rest of the cast do their job well but you just know Budgie is going to get stitched up by Charlie Endell every week and you can usually see it coming miles away.
Altogether a disappointment. Maybe Minder etc trained us to expect a much titghter script.
