From the Back Cover
‘He has boldly attempted to create a new method of historical analysis and a new framework for the study of the human sciences as a whole.’ – Theodore Zeldin, New Statesman
Here, Michel Foucault calls us to look critically at specific historical events in order to uncover new layers of significance. In doing so, he challenges our assumptions not only about history, but also about the nature of language and reason, even of truth. The scope is vast, but it is Foucault’s skill that, by means of his unique narrative style, his penetrating gaze is able to confront our own. First published in English: 1973.

Customer Reviews
An interesting, but challenging read
Foucault manages to impress again with his unique viewpoint on this crucial period of medical history. He challenges the reader to consider the traditional way in which the birth of modern medicine is perceived, and succeeds in changing your outlook, if not always in agreement with him. His writing style remains difficult and it takes a while to get used to his very literary and often metaphorical style - but it really is worth the effort.
