(The Stage 1 Syllabus us shown)
As you can see from the syllabus, the knowledge and practical ability that you require for the Stage 1 exam is very clearly disseminated into 'elements'. this is to encourage you to be systematic in your training and to ensure that your practical ability is underpinned with the necessary background knowledge.

A useful guide
This books tells you everything you should know for the BHS Stage 1, such as the syllabus and hints and tips for both riding and horse care. There are also helpful diagrams, such as points of the horse and the foot. Everything that could come up in your exam is covered. However, if you're looking for a book that tells you HOW to do the things you're required, (eg. what technique you should use when mucking out, tacking up etc.) I'd refer you the 'Course Companion' series by Maxine Cave.
