The Mouse for You!
I'm a big fan of Call of Duty and I'd been using my old Dell mouse, that came free with my computer, since I started. It wasn't a bad mouse and I thought I was pretty good with it.
But one of my friends was always a step ahead of me and he eventually told me of his £50 mouse and how he can't play without it.
I had some cash to blow and decided it would be nice to have a fancy looking Mouse. read some reviews and got the Death Adder.
My friend hasn't beaten me since.
The DeathAdder, first of all, looks incredible. Sleek black design with that softly pulsing, blue triple snake of Razer. The pic above seems to show it as a strange tacky shiny plastic top. It's not it's a soft plastic top layer which feels great. Sometimes I swear there's a layer of cushion under my fingers and yet there's the split second click of a hard plastic touch.
One day I'll open up this mouse and try to find the fan that keeps this mouse afloat. This mouse moves with your hand with barely a hint of resistance.
I was fairly worried as the sensitivity compared to my old mouse was intensely high. I went into a game to try and get used to it and within minutes I was at the top of the score board. While the sensitivity is huge compared to a standard factory mouse there's a precision in this mouse that stops your crosshair with pinpoint accuracy right where you want it. The sensitivity is still adjustable so that you can keep it where you feel safe but you'll start to realise that no matter how fast you spin round you always seem to be in control.
The ergonomics are great. I have huge hands and yet this mouse is a perfect size. I'm afraid I can't speak for the smaller handed people on this one but I can't imagine it being a problem for any teenage-adult sized hands...
There are two little buttons on the side by the thumb which I use to lean left and right while still keeping full mobility with my left hand (which is also good for doing odd combinations of dances to avoid getting shot).
Alternatively you can use them for reload, aim, fire, caps lock, whatever you want.
The wheel is lovely and chunky with a nice solid click(the last thing you want is to over scroll and whip out a pistol as you charge into heavy MG fire :S).
ALAS. There is one major flaw(just when you thought it was the mouse of your dreams)
This is the mouse of your dreams. And yet the hard plastic sides allow vile finger prints to manifest themselves on your precious mouse :'(
Sometimes I stop dead halfway into an important game to give the sides a quick rub down with my sleeve :P
In conclusion. If you're a Gamer, this is the mouse for you.
Thanks for reading my essay :)
A gift for the trigger-happy gamer; useful for other applications too
This is a really nifty mouse - it's one of the few examples of computing hardware which seems to be about as perfect as you could wish for. The appearance is wonderful, with a smooth matte black one-piece look (the buttons just extend from the rest of the top) and a wonderful texture, grippy but almost velvety to the touch.
The build quality is excellent. The wheel is nice and chunky with graduated "click" marks on it, optionally lit from within. Buttons are a good quality with a nice clear (but not loud) click and, for me, good reach. The only decoration is the Razer "3-headed snake" design, pulsing in a nicer blue light than Amazon's illustrations suggest. This too can be switched off if you find the lighting up too distracting. It's an added bonus for me, because I live on the Isle of Man, where the Razer symbol resembles a cooler (and equally Celtic-looking) version of the "3 legs" flag!
Razer's mouse driver loaded quickly and doesn't take up much disk space, but it's a tour-de-force of tweaks and settings, allowing incredibly fast strafing and customised buttons for hardcore gamers. To get the most from the teflon "feet", you need a decent grade of mousemat, but if you get one then the Deathadder zips about like a hockey puck. Even if you're not a gamer, it is useful for when you want to lower the pointer speed and up the pixel sensitivity, eg. fiddly graphics editing. As a normal office mouse it also behaves well, and is very comfortable - unfortunately only for the right-handed, though. The real plus here is that Razer's software allows instant switching between saved profiles - so even in mid-game you can just flip to a different style of mousing whenever you need it... no faffing around with Windows mouse settings each time. You can even customise a button to change settings "on the fly".
I'm not easily impressed by hardware hype, but this time I have to say that unless you're left-handed and/or prefer a very slow mouse, or like a very flashy looking mouse, I can't imagine wanting any other.
