Customer Reviews
Not good enough if you want to learn more advanced flash photography
I'm an experienced natural light photographer but not so happy in using flash beyond sticking it on auto and letting the camera/flash automatic settings do their work. I bought this book to learn more and found it distinctly lacking. This is great if you need something more than the instruction manual to tell you what each button is for and how to stick in on auto, but is very limited in teaching the practical application and more advanced uses of the canon speedlight system. I want to use my flash in manual more, I want to use it off camera, use multiple speedlights and learn more about bouncing and diffusion. Though this touches on those things its not in the depth I expected from a book dedicated to flash photography. Also as per the previous review, too many pages on posing etc. If I wanted that I'd buy a general photography book.
Brilliant book - essential for Speedlite novices
I've recently bought my first camera and the Canon Speedlite 580 EX to go with it. After hours on the internet I still had no idea how to use the flash. The instruction booklet is accurate, but very brief. Hence I was confused about how to set the flash up and when to use the various functions.
This book is very detailed and has lots of clear photos and instructions on how to use the flash. Furthermore it has real world advice on which features to use for various sorts of pictures.
As far as I know it is the only book of it's kind and essential for anyone using Canon's Speedlites for the first time. Professionals probably wouldn't get much from the book, but then it is aimed at amateurs and enthusiasts.
Incomplete and useful only if you have no idea about flash photography
Flash photography was a frustrating mystery to me when I bought this book. Although it provides some basic, much needed information for the complete beginner, it contains a lot of off-subject items (posing your subjects and rules of composition for natural light photographs), but does not cover vital issues such as modelling flash light and gel filters.
This book predates the EX 580 mark II, although the differences between the old and new models aren't so huge.
Basic info is adequate and well-written: GN, wireless flash, basic techniques.
There are some convenient 'crib sheets' for standard flash situations: portraits, macro, event photography, although the amount of detail is necessarily meagre. The images used in the book are, frankly, average.
If you have a basic grounding in flash photography, you'd do better to visit dedicated websites.
