Dr. Heber maintains that everyone is born with a particular shape and that this shape makes a huge difference in how you should approach weight loss. We've all heard about apple shape vs. pear shape and upper body fat vs. lower body fat, but how does this affect your ability to lose weight? Apple-shaped women tend to have more muscle than pear shaped women of the same height, and upper body fat is easier to lose than lower body fat, which is maintained by female hormones. Dr. Heber teaches the difference between the shape you can change and the shape you cannot, and how to do this with the right amount of dietary protein (and most women eat too little protein). Based on over 3500 measurements made by his researchers at UCLA, Dr. Heber has come up with tables that estimate how much protein you need in your diet at a given height and weight, and how many calories you should consume every day. Then Dr. Heber helps you build your own ideal diet, starting with protein, then 7 colourful servings of fruits and vegetables and finally whole grains. Dr.

Dr Heber is a respected expert in his field. He is a (if not the) world authority on obecisty. He is not in the pay of any company. This is an excellent book in its own right.

VJ-sales personal opinion of shakes and his view of the cost of one variety, should not dissuade people from reading what is a truely ground-breaking book.
This is a method by which people acheive weight-loss while not depriving themselves, and suffering in the process: as such the results for the person are far more likely to be permanent.

Whatever "real food" is in the modern world, I personally put more faith in Dr Herber's advice, than that of any arm-chair expert!
In sum, if you are serious about long-term weight loss: read this book and keep an open mind.

An absolutely fantastic book, highly recommended. It has been proven and doctors have been in agreement that highly nutritious meal replacement shakes are the most effective and fastest way of losing weight without depriving the body of nutrients. Dr Heber explains the Power of Protein and how essential it is not just for weight loss but for the general well being of the body. It is difficult to find the right amount of protein that an individual needs from normal foods without adding extra calories and fat to your meal. By personalizing your protein requirements through Dr Hebers book and adding colourful foods (fruits and vegetables)to you regular meals, you are able to consume the correct amount of protein for your individual needs without worrying about the unwanted calories. You'll lose weight, improve your body shape, gain energy, and will have introduced a healthier eating habit into your life. So take control of your weight and health, and get started on the new you!

Firstly, the three previous reviewers all sell something which is related to this book. The shakes.

Anyway, other than that, the reason I'm not too fussed on this book is because it's almost impossible to do the plan without drinking the protein shakes he goes on and on and ON about. It's too expensive, and it's not real food.

I'm not saying it won't work, but I think you could do much better than following this plan. Maybe there is a way to stay within the calorie limit AND consume the necessary amount of protein in the form of real food - THAT would be a fairly good plan. But the L.A. Shape Diet insists the use of protein shakes which just can't be considered real food.

That is my ultimate dislike.
