Competitive Retirement
This is a very American book.

It makes some good points. It shows the way in which the terms "retired" and "retirement" can discourage people to whom they are applied. It shows that for many older people continuing to work for money can be the most rewarding life-choice. It points out the responsibility of older people to be politically and socially involved,given the problems faced by society. It describes the strength and diversity of the US voluntary sector

Weaknesses of the book to my mind are
(1) It tends to focus on people who have been successful in the world of work, and to offer only limited support to those facing retirement in a less confident frame of mind or with less entrepreneurial attitudes.
(2) It tends to underplay the tensions that can arise in retirement even between people in generally stable marriages.
(3) It tends to underplay the more tranquil enjoyments that life can offer (which is strange considering that one of the authors is a yoga teacher).

Some readers could get a lot of good from this book, but I am concerned that others might actually find the rather jaunty tone
discouraging. I am all for self-help, but it needs to be on the basis of full recognition of all the difficulties that the person seeking to engage in self-help may be encountering.
