Ultimate Eurovision Party
Pretty good album of eurovision nostalgia from all years.Disc 1 is by far the best and even the songs in foreign language aren't that bad.Disc 2 starts off ok but then goes into later years which were pretty awful. Overall though a pretty good set but was miffed at a few omissions especially as this album has 20 songs from the Uk but not 'Let me be the one' from The Shadows which after all came second in 1975. Also would have liked the 1984 winner Diggi Loo Diggi Ley from The Herreys as this did chart over here where as some did not.
NOT OFFICIAL
I bought this CD thinking it was a new line of CDs produced by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to help commemorate the Longest Running Music Contest in the World!
But upon playing it and looking at the track listing, I found it wasn't very representative of all the participants throughout the entire Eurovision Contest, there have been a massive 46 countries participating across the current 52 years from one times including Morroco and Eternal Participants such as France and the UK.
But in the track-listings of the 42 songs on the double album, a massive 20 of the tracks are UK entries and to think we have only officialy won 5 times and Ireland 7 times it's very disconcerting.
So in my confusion over the overt bias to the UK I contacted Mr Svante Stockselius (Current EBU head of the Eurovision Song Contest) asking if it was official and whether there were other CDs in the various other EBU Member States with similar bias, and here was my response:
"This is not an official CD released by the EBU. It is only intended for the UK market.
The EBU only release one official CD in connection to the ESC each year, that is the official complation album with all the participating songs.
Best regards
Svante Stockselius
ESC Executive Supervisor"
But back to the CD itself, please note that not all songs on the CD are recorded as performed in the ESC, for example for Track 5 of CD 2 - Dana International "Diva" it is sung in English on the CD when on the ESC it was sung in her native Hebrew.
So other than that, it's fine...
Positives:
Able to listen to songs that weren't previously released on EBU CDs
Negitives:
Portrays itself to be a official EBU album with use of ESC Trademarks, and it doesn't even state anywhere on CD or cover that it's not official.
Ultimate Euro Cheese
Enjoyable enough, most of the classics are on disc one. But where is "Knock, Knock, Who's There?" by Mary Hopkin (UK entry 1970, 2nd place)? Without that song it cannot be considered 'Ultimate'.
