Quite good contest.
This Eurovision Song Contest 2009 DVD comes on 3 discs:
Disc 1. Semi Final 1 & National Performances Top 1-5
Disc 2. Semi Final 2 & National Performances Top 6-10 & Interview with winner
Disc 3. Grand Final.

Aspect Ratio: 1.78:1 (16x9) Anamorphic Widescreen (Semi Finals & Grand Final).
Other sections like the National Performances vary - some are in 1.78:1, others are 1.33:1 and the UK National Performance on disc 1 looks around 2.4:1.

It comes on 3xDVD9s, with a duration of 485 min, is not region coded and is in PAL format. It includes Dolby 5.1 and Dolby Stereo.

Location: The 2009 contest was held in Moscow, Russia. The final was on 16th May 2009.

It features 42 countries (25 of which are in the final). The final includes an opening act by the Cirque du Soleil. I think the opening acts could have been better especially semi-final ones.

Bad case design: In this release are 3 discs. Unfortunately, like the 2008 release, the discs are placed on top of each other in the same section. I think this could lead to scratching of the discs. The case also holds the discs less securely than the Eurovision 2008 case. When I got this Eurovision 2009 set, the top disc had come loose in transit. Having the discs placed on top of each other means, if you just want to watch disc 3 (the final) you have to take out the other discs first.

I think it would have been better if the interview with the winner was on the 3rd disc instead of the 2nd, since, if you watched the discs in order, you'd get the interview with the winner before the actual contest final.

Picture Quality: Okay. I think it could be better (and the national performances on discs 1 & 2 are of varying PQ, some not very good, others are okay). This contest DVD's picture quality is obviously nowhere near as good as the high definition broadcast.

Audio: The semi finals and the final are in Dolby Digital 5.1. The National Performances 1-10 are in Dolby Stereo. As usual there is no option to hear the local commentary that is on the broadcasts.

It's a shame they still aren't releasing the contest on Blu-ray in high definition, and all that is released is an SD PAL version, especially when the contest is recorded and broadcast in 1080/50i HD (recorded at 5 times the resolution of this DVD).

Great value!
The quality of production this year was excellent. Three DVDs (two semifinals and the final) all feature additional bonus materials and it's a great deal. As always, amazon.co.uk dispatched the product as soon as it became available and the price was better than anywhere else. Thank you!
