Customer Reviews
A good spook - very enjoyable
I would highly recommend this film. Its well filmed, performances are great, and the suspense and scare factor is really high! There were plenty of moments when i jumped out of my seat - particularly toward the build up at the ending.
It will be compared to the 'grudge' etc because of the young ghostly girl, but this shouldn't be dismissed as just another horror film, its unique and highly enjoyable.
Film of two halves
The premise of this film is good, if a bit old hat now. A separated couple meet at the husband's remote farmhouse. Their daughter disappears and there's the usual historical element which accounts for the disappearance. Then another girl appears purporting to know where their daughter is. A few good points here- I liked the atmosphere created and the background story was intriguing. Flashbacks were well shot and significantly different in style. So far a good old fashioned ghost story.
Then, as with most contemporary horror that does not have the courage of its convictions or believes that its audience is not intelligent enough to be intrigued throughout a film, everything comes crashing down. The mother disappears into the underworld to find her daughter and it all gets incomprehensible. Up until this point it had been an (almost) plausible story showing how people react differently to grief caused by the loss of a child. I kept wanting to make connections with greek mythology but its not that deep. The writers simply ran out of ideas. Its almost as if they all sat round a table and played consequences on a sheet of paper, folding over the previous scene description before the next person wrote another one. By that time you don't care any more.
Good points- cinematography was good, the creation of atmosphere was interesting and the relationships between the characters were intriguing.
Bad points- Unlikeable girls in the two child roles makes it difficult to care what happens to them and there's some swapping of faces and personalities towards the end that leads to confusion. Acting is generally pretty average.
Overall- watchable but don't expect to be satisfied by the ending.
A jump in your seat treat
I was almost put off seeing this film after reading a poor review, but I have to say that I found the film to be gripping, well acted, very scary and atmospheric. The theme of a mother doing everything she can to bring her daughter back from the dead was compelling, especially considering the ultimate consequences! A treat for fans of horror thrillers.
