Customer Reviews

Great book. Invaluable for those studying econometrics4
This is a very good book for those studying econometrics. The book starts at a basic level and builds up knowledge over the subsequent chapters with well written, easy to understand explanations of the topic. There are markers for any material considered more advanced and which can be skipped for those at a basic level. This book is recommended for anyone doing econometrics. I found it a great help

know your calculus3
Note that this review refers to both 'Undergraduate Econometrics' and 'Principles of Econometrics', both by the same authors: for some reason Amazon adds my review of the former book to the latter book as well, even though they are quite different. I'll give a review of both books here since I've used them both.

'Undergraduate Econometrics' rate: 3/5

Know your calculus well before buying this book: this book has rigorous use of theoretical proofs, albeit optional.
The information in this book is in a concentrated format.
It exists to cover the core of econometrics in the shortest time possible, supported by mathematical proofs.
This book will benefit those who are well-versed in mathematical economics and statistics: differentials, logarithms etc.
If you are such a person then this book will offer you a good insight into econometrics.
For persons with no such talents this book will be intimidating to work through and I don't think you will gain much from it, it would only lead to frustration and confusion.
'Undergraduate Econometrics' is not as good as Gujaratis's book Basic Econometrics 4/e, so if you have a choice (and time) then get Gujarati instead - he offers better explanations and covers more ground.
It looses a few stars because the explanations are not so good and too many of the exercises requires advanced knowledge of calculus and/or mathematical statistics.

'Principles of Econometrics' rate: 5/5

This book is very different from the above book, it targets those completely new to econometrics and also those who have a non-Economics background. The above book only targets Economics students.
The appendix of the book has an introduction and reference to the essentials of calculus and statistics, and includes exercises. The appendixes of each chapter contains extra theory and proofs.

There are two important differences between the two books:
i) this second book is less mathematical and mainly presents the formulas and explains their use, there is little mathematical theoretical coverage, i.e. fewer mathematical proofs.
ii) this second book has extra chapters on time-series analysis and includes two chapters on financial econometrics and macroeconometrics.

This is a book for those who want to apply econometrics to empirical (i.e. "real world") analysis, as opposed to theoretical study, which the above book is better for.
There is more text in this book than formulae, and the explanations are not that hard to understand, the authors have taken more care in this latter book to explain things properly.
This book is better balanced than the above book: those skilled in calculus can read the appendixes of each chapter for more theory, those not so skilled in calculus can just do the regular chapters and ignore the appendixes. So this book should suit a wide range of users.

Excellent condition, speedy delivery5
The book arrived sooner than I was expecting which was a major bonus as my studies had already begun. It is in excellent condition as promised and is a useful study guide for anybody new to econometrics/empirical economics.
