A true opera talent

A long awaited follow up to her 2007 debut album Handel Arias, Danielle de Niese continues her themed style of album, this time a collection of Mozart arias.

Since winning first prize in Australian TV show `Young Talent Time' at the age of 9 in 1988 her career has become a success story, particularly after her parent's decision to move to Los Angeles in order to support her career. At the age of 15 she made her professional opera debut with the Los Angeles Opera, and boasted the youngest ever performer at the Metropolitan Opera aged 19, playing the role of Barbarina in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro.

Her remarkable success in the USA opera circuit explains perhaps her relatively low profile image in the UK - the `true' opera singer, i.e one who performs in a complete opera stage production will usually struggle to compete in terms of album sales, and hence popularity, with those considered `opera style' singers such as Katherine Jenkins, Hayley Westenra and Camilla Kerslake who all have enjoyed album chart success by singing extracts of popular opera arias and well known classical pieces.

This Mozart Album is in some respects a compromise, for we get to hear only a few highlights of her undoubted opera vocal talents. The selection of 12 pieces on the album is a well chosen one however, ranging from some Mozart sacred arias to some of his popular operas, plus a duet with Bryn Terfel. It's a lovely album, and Danielle's seductive soprano style makes it so accessible and easy to listen to.

While I'm a great fan and admirer of those opera style singers, this really is an example of true opera.

the reviews are not so hot but I really like the tone of her voice and the choice of arias. Not at all disappointed!
