About the Author
Louise Chataway, who compiled this volume, was born in Dublin in
1865. As a young woman she came to London, where she lodged in a Bloomsbury
boarding house with her friend Annie, who worked alongside her in a savings
bank.

One of their fellow lodgers was a nineteen-year-old merchant's clerk called
Norman Chataway; Louise and Norman fell in love, were married in 1895, and
emigrated to Rhodesia (now known as Zimbabwe) in southern Africa, where
Norman Chataway took a job with the British South Africa Company. They
spent the rest of their lives in Africa: Norman Chataway died in January
1935, and Louise died shortly afterwards.
