Get closer to the action
The world's smallest and thinnest* 10x optical wide zoom digital camera. High-powered zoom cameras do not have to be bulky. Olympus believe even cameras with a high-powered zoom should have a slim, compact design. Compare the Olympus µ [mju:] 9000 with other 10x optical zoom cameras and you will see the difference in size. If you are looking for a high-powered zoom camera but with a thin, sleek design, the Olympus µ [mju:] 9000 is the only choice.
Available in stylish Midnight Black and Royal Blue, the metal bodied Olympus µ [mju:] 9000 features a huge 10x wide optical zoom within an impressively slim and compact body to bring the action that bit closer.
This state-of-the-art 12-megapixel camera also includes Dual Image Stabilisation for razor-sharp photography in otherwise tricky conditions, Shadow Adjustment Technology to deliver even exposures, plus Advanced Face Detection Technology for properly focused people pictures.
* As of October 2008 among compact digital cameras with a 10x optical straight zoom lens unit.
Description
With its striking 10x wide optical zoom (28-280mm equivalent in 35mm terms), the extra-slim 12 Megapixel µ [mju:] 9000 wields its high-performance lens to get right up close to distant subjects – or to pan out for magnificent wide-angle shots.
The 6.9cm/2.7-inch HyperCrystal III LCD displays stunningly clear images even in bright sunlight, and its wide viewing angles make framing convenient from almost any perspective.
Like each of the latest cameras in the "classic" µ series, this coolly styled model also includes Dual Image Stabilisation, a feature that reduces blur by using a mechanical image stabiliser and high ISO values. The sleek, metal-bodied µ [mju:] 9000 is available in stylish Midnight Black and Royal Blue variations, and shoots to both xD-Picture card and microSD.

Excellent compact camera
My first impression was of a well built, sturdy, light and compact camera. I have used it for about a month now and am pleased.
What we wanted was a small camera for holiday snaps but also for more demanding photography; this camera does both. We did not want anything bulky/heavy or with an overlarge lens. Rather, something that would slip into a pocket without straining the fabric.
As to how it turned out, well we got what we wanted. It does a good job.
*The 10x optical zoom works well and has been used for distant architectural details. Also handy for candid street photography.
*The 12 megapixels mean you can crop an awful lot off an image and still end up with a picture you can print out to a goood size.
*The image stabilisation works very well. When photographing in museums without flash I have been able to hand-hold at 1/4 of a second. If there is any camera shake a second exposure usually gets it right.
*The macro and super macro allow one to focus as close as 1cm. Allied to the 12 mp CCD this gives a pretty good close up facility. Tiny insects can be photographed and printed out to the size of cats!
The battery lasted for almost 150 shots before needing a recharge.
Other features:
a good size screen,
intuitive controls,
lightweight,
'beauty' mode retouches minor blemishes in-camera.
My only (very minor) criticisms:
for me the zoom/wide angle slider is a bit small (I will get used to it)
the position of the flash means I tend to put my finger over it (again, I'll get used to it),
the transfer interface is a bit clunky - its not one-click,
the in-camera automatic panorama stitching facility is a bit hit and miss.
Overall very pleased.
The one feature not present that I would like in future models is a programmable setting. Being able to flip between two settings easily and quickly would be great.
user friendly
im no camera geek but what i liked best is you can take it out and use it
straight away with out looking at the instrutions just set it on auto and
off you go having said that the instructions are easy to follow so learn as you go. great camera does a lot for a compact camera picture quailty
brillant to the layman.
On, Off button dilemma
The Olympus Mju 9000 is a well made camera with a good lens, all the menu's are intuitive and easy to follow. The flash light has a limited working distance up to about 12 feet maximum. The big draw back is the on-off button, it is small and recessed into the top plate of the camera. I found it almost impossible to operate by finger, and resorted to using my pen to turn the camera on and off.
