Editorial Reviews
Review
"There is plenty of information on each spot and also plenty of good colour photos throughout. The surfers tales give a good insight into the atmosphere of local surfers and a board guide shows what the guys that know their waves are riding. All in all a very useful guide laid out really well." Wavelength "NEW and in our opinion the best guide to surfing yet produced" A1 Surfshop "The ultimate travel companion - exploring not only the waves of Europe but also its diverse culture, because surf and travel are inextricably linked." Sam Lamiroy, top European pro surfer and all-round good Geordie bloke!"
Wavelength Issue 144 May 2005
It's a really good book that will be indispensable for every surfer.
The Observer, Escape, May 15 2005
A welcome addition to any surfer's back pocket.
Customer Reviews
Best of British!
A great read and the perfect guide for the professional or amatuer. If your planning a road trip or just fancy a change from your local break then I can highly recommend this guide. We spent two weeks travelling GB and found loads of spots we'd never heard of. It's also nice to support a fellow female surfer. Have also bought the european guide which we plan to use this autumn, will let you know how we get on!
essential for surfing in the UK
Finallly bought my own copy after my mate demanded his back! I would say this book is essential for anyone who surfs in the UK. It has all the surfing ifo you'll need from all the breaks, board recommendations, wind and swell directions, tides and any access issues. It also has surfer friendly places to eat sleep and drink, where all the local surf shops are as well as a list of all the UK surf shools.
I especially like the way there's advice and stories from all the top UK surfers too. Feels like a real insight into the UK surf scene, not just a bunch of breaks thrown together. The one weakness the book does have is tht the maps aren't fantastic, but they're good enough to get you too the breaks - and that's all that matters. This books gone everywhere with me for the last year, and my new copy will have pride of place in my glove box.
below average guide book
Although the book offers a bit of an overview of the main British Surfing beaches, there are more gaps than you'd expect to find. As apparently one of the only options out there, I'd recommend just getting sticking to getting the info you need/want off the Internet. There are no listings of surf hire shops/ surf shops nor pointers to places where you might find tide times. It lacks explanation of some of the more basic surfing facts that beginners (like me) often buy books for - like what the different types of break mean. It's got lots of pretty pictures and maps but beyond that, it really is rather a lot of money for a wad of paper. If you're expecting a book that kind-of brings a lonely planet style perspective to British Surfing, this isn't it. When you find one, let me know.
