Great for Vocab4
I found this book really helpful as a vocabulary reference, but don't buy it if you are looking for anything more. There is a good description of the way the arabic alphabet works, but beyond that it is restricted to essentially a vocab list with some fun exercises to help you learn. It is definatly not a text book but works pretty well in conjungtion with a beginner's arabic course.

Easy learning5
This is a marvellous book using a tried and tested format of many language books, mainly for children, but all the better for that in terms of ease of assimilation. For instance lots of labelled pictures, games, pictures to match with words, push out flash cards, etc. make learning more like a game, and very enjoyable. The best of several books on Urdu that I have bought. Highly recommended, but needs to be used in conjunction with other books once the basic vocabulary has been mastered.

Surprise yourself5
The basic idea of the book is that you learn to recognise on sight 100 key words in Urdu, using little tear-out cards that have an English word on one side with the Urdu script for the Urdu word, together with a transliteration, on the other. You don't need to focus on remembering individual Urdu letters (which is good because most differ depending on where they are in a word), but after a while you begin to recognise them. A fun book to use with your children as well. If you thought Urdu script would just be impossible for you to recognise, give this book a try.
