X-com Apocalypse5
Probably the best game I ever played. Period.
It has everything... Most important of all, FEELING. Something now games lack almost completely. You should try it and you will know what I'm talking about. There is no point in explaining... just try it.
Cheers

One of the best strategy games ever made5
Although I never played either of the original X-Com games, I got X-Com Apocalypse as a present, and found it to be the best strategy game I have ever played. It is set 80 years in the future, where the third alien war is being waged on Earth. You must repel the alien invaders by stopping them from infiltrating Earth organisations, and then stop the attacks completely by researching technology to take the fight to the Alien Dimension. Once you have mastered the interface (which admittedly does take some getting used to) you realise just how intuitive it is - any of the game's sub-menus can be opened with a maximum of 3 clicks.

Because I got the budget version of the game, it only came with an electronic manual, so I didn't bother reading it. I strongly advise that you do this, as X-Com is a complicated game. Despite this, it quickly draws you in. The game's structure gives it two elements, the first is real-time 'cityscape' management (where you manage day to day operations eg building new facilities, equipping agents and vehicles, diplomatic relations with other organisations etc), as well as fending off UFO attacks with your military vehicles. The second is the tactical missions, which is typical squad-based combat. You can do this in real-time or turn based - I imagine that X-Com veterans would feel more comfortable with turn based, but I preferred real-time because I think it gives more emphasis on quick but good decisions.

The two aspects of the game is one of its strong points - both are executed very well. Although most of the game is spent on the cityscape, preparing for the next mission or the long term, the tactical missions (and UFO attacks) are frequent enough to keep you interested, but not too close together as this would wear out your resources. Another good thing about the game is the diplomacy - you must keep as many organisations in your good books. Failure to do this results in problems. Attack the government and you'll find your money dry up. Let an arms supplier become controlled by aliens and they won't sell you equipment. This adds another tactical edge to the game.

X-Com: Apocalypse has 5 difficulty settings, allowing for plenty of replayability. I won't say anything about the types of technology you can research later in the game, as it would spoil it, but basically you can develop some VERY powerful weapons. At the start there is already something to research, which gives you a good introduction to how this works. Whatever happens, you will find this game a challenge - but don't cheat. I never do, but in a game like this it really would wreck it.

In the game there is a 'UFOpaedia' which keeps information on vehicles, base facilities etc, as well as what you have researched. It is worth reading all of this at the start of the game. It will take a while, but is worth it because it gives you a good idea of what happens in the game, and the sheer amount of history and depth present shows just how detailed the game is.

I believe that this is one of the few true classics. It is old and has outdated graphics, but these are irrelevant. The game is so good you can waste hours on it (believe me, I have). Although not as addictive as, say, Championship Manager, it still demands a lot of your time. As long as you can learn the interface quickly, the game opens up into an absorbing tactical world.

Best X-COM by far !!!5
This has got to be my favourite game so far, it never got boring and the real time mode was a marked improvement on the regular turn based mode of the previous 2 games. Fan of X-COM or not... GET THIS GAME.
