Product Description

Following the release of 1986's heavy metal classic PEACE SELLS BUT WHO'S BUYING?, half of Megadeth's original line-up abruptly split. Guitarist Chris Poland and drummer Gar Samuelson parted, leaving the band in the hands of guitarist/singer Dave Mustaine and bassist Dave Ellefson. Despite the factthat the two remaining Megadeth members had become addictedto hard drugs, they wasted little time in finding replacements in drummer Chuck Behler and guitarist Jeff Young. This second lineup lasted just long enough to issue a third Megadeth album, 1988's SO FAR, SO GOOD, SO WHAT!
While very short (barely over 30 minutes) and not on par with its exceptional predecessor, SO FAR helped to solidify Megadeth's standing as one of speed metal's leading acts. "Anarchy in the U.S.A"., a reworking of the Sex Pistols' "Anarchy in the U.K"., proved popular among MTV's metal set but doesn't come close to matching the original's spiteful power. "502" (the L.A.P.D. code for driving intoxicated), the venomous "Liar", a tribute to Metallica's late bassist Cliff Burton ("In My Darkest Hour"), the anti-censorship "Hook In Mouth", and the lethal one-two punch of "Into the Lungs of Hell" and "Set the World Afire" fare much better.

Good album despite some inconsistency4
Not one of Megadeth's best albums, neither is it all that bad, in fact it's pretty good. The album is best described as frantic and chaotic, perhaps a little cynical and a tad juvenile in tone compared to other Megadeth albums.

This album shines in songs such as "In My Darkest Hour", which was inspired by the death of Cliff Burton (Metallica), it is a dynamic song with plenty of tempo and mood changes.
Another good track is "Mary Jane", written about a girl of the same name who suffered from a mental illness and was burned at the stake during the infamous Salem witch trials.
The album also features a good cover of Sex Pistols' song "Anarchy In The UK", albeit with some incorrect lyrics but despite this, for me as a metalhead, it's a huge improvement over the original as it's done in in thrash metal style. Also to note, Steve Jones (Sex Pistols) actually plays guitar on this cover.

To summarise, whilst there are a few tracks on this album you might skip, there is more than enough good material to keep one satisfied.

Another thrash metal masterpiece by Megadeth.5
One of Megadeths darekest album. This is a masterpiece every track is a killer track. Best has to be Into The Lungs Of hell, Set The World Afire, Mary Jane, 502, Hook In Mouth and of course the classic In My Darkest Hour. Everyone is saying that the Sex Pistols cover Anarchy In The Uk is a terrible cover but i think it's great they did a better job then Sex pistols anyway. The band was on alot of drugs during the recording of this album and to make such a masterpiece was a miracle. Great start too Megadeth it's a classic.

A new and not unpleasant experience4
Back in 1988 as a fresh faced 18 year old headbanger, I was uncertain and possibly a little scared of thrash metal. My idea was that all thrash was like Napalm Death (remember back then no one split music into so many neat little categories-we had rock, heavy metal, thrash, that was it for the genre). Then a very nice welsh chap called Glyn lent me this album and ...and Justice for All (Metallica-as if you didn't know). Well how things changed for me.
This is a superb album with excellent in your face metal throughout. The only exception, and reason for 4 stars not 5, is the dire cover of Anarchy in the UK. There are some songs that the Good Lord, or Satan if that's your bag, would rather you left alone, and this is definitely one of them. Think remake of The Italian Job in musical terms. See what I mean. Don't let this deter you though. If you want to try Megadeth then this is as good a place as any to start, if you are already a fan then I'm willing to bet this is in your cd collection and warmly loved already.
