This eponymously-titled U.S. debut introduced the world to the Gipsy Kings' unique, pop-inflected take on native Spanish music, in the process bringing the band international popularity. Though the group's members aren't technically "gipsies" (they acquired the name during their early days of travelling, gigging, and playing in the streets of Southern France), their music draws heavily from gipsy and flamenco traditions in content and style. However the Gipsy Kings regional roots are only the first ingredient in their special brand of World Fusion; elements of Latin American, Middle Eastern and North African music are also in evidence.
On this, arguably the finest of the group's efforts, the calibre of the musicianship is striking. Rhythmically athletic acoustic guitars, passionate singing, and stirring, syncopated handclapscoalesce to create a fresh, romantic, and eminently danceable sound. Modulations of mood abound, from joyous, percussive romps ("Bem, Bem, Maria") through more sedate tunes evocative of intimate Spanish cafes ("Quiero Saber"), to plaintivemelodies embellished with gorgeous flamenco motifs, such as"Tu Quieres Volver". Also included are two of the band's biggest hits, "Djobi Djoba" and the endlessly infectious "Bamboleo". GIPSY KINGS is an excellent place to start exploring this inventive, wonderfully accessible music.

Fantastic summer music
This CD is the best way to get in the mood for summer parties and barbecues! It has upbeat songs - such as the well-known "Bamboleo" and "Bem, Bem Maria" - as well as slightly more relaxed ones like "A Mi Manera" (a Spanish version of Frank Sinatra's "My Way" - great!) and "Inspiration". The guitar-playing is, naturally, top-notch, and I really can't fault the CD at all - except it makes me want to go on holiday!

So make the most of when it's hot - have a barbecue, have some sangria and have this CD!

Brilliant!
This is the first CD I ever bought (back in the day when we upgraded from cassettes and thought we were really cutting edge) and it still remains a firm favourtie to this day. I love every single one of the tracks on the CD and it is really rare for me to say that (there's usually at least 2 or 3 that I consider "fillers" on every album I own).

This is such an uplifting album; songs like Bomboleo can't fail to have you dancing round the room and the slower ones like Un Amor are so chilled out - they're all such a tonic to listen to. The guitars and the singing are amazing. Like the last reviewer said, it makes you want to go on holiday - but if like me you still have a few more months in the grey and gloom that is Blighty before holiday season, then this CD can't fail to lift your spirits for a few hours.

I highly recommend this album and I hope you enjoy as much as I do.

La rumba flamenca llevada a su maxima expresion por este brillantisimo grupo de franceses que canta un español muy peculiar; desde rumbas picantes como DJOBI DJOBA, BEM BEM MARIA y BAMBOLEO hasta baladas preciosas como TU QUIERES VOLVER y QUIERO SABER; incluye instrumentales ricas en armonias como MOOREA e INSPIRACION y un clasico como A MI MANERA (MY WAY); este disco fue precisamente el DEBUT de los reyes gitanos (Y QUE DEBUT, BARBARO!!), un disco que merece ser parte de toda coleccion.
