In TALES OF THE COUNTRY, Brian Viner described how he and his family upped sticks from north London to deepest Herefordshire, chasing a rural idyll that, eventually, they caught up with. By the end of their first year at Docklow Manor, Brian was struck by how quickly they had adapted to their new life, and been adopted by their new friends and neighbours. But wondering when they would stop being referred to by the locals as the 'buggers from off' paled into insignificance as they tried to develop some of the cottages attached to the manor as holiday lets. Neither Brian nor Jane had any experience in the tourist industry, and this quickly showed as they encountered their share of "Fawlty Towers"-type disasters -- and guests. A wonderfully warm follow-up to the first volume, and full of the same delightful humour and digressions, THE PHEASANTS' REVOLT: MORE TALES OF THE COUNTRY brings us right up to date with the Viner family's trials and tribulations.

Customer Reviews
Very enjoyable read
I read the first book, Tales of the Country and was really looking forward to the second. And it did not disappoint. Brian Viner is a funny guy. I like the way he writes. He has more anecdotes than I've had hot dinners and where most people would invite people like Elvis, Bill Clinton and Mother Teresa to a fantasy dinner party, I'd definitely be asking Mr Viner. The reason I am not giving his book 5 stars is not because he freely admits to being one of those people on the A49 who does not obey the 30mph limits. But because he committed to print the fact that he throws away dauphinoise potatoes. Skip quickly past that criminal lapse in judgment and it shouldn't affect your enjoyment of this otherwise brilliant book.
A Brilliant Holiday read
What a fantastic writer. Everyday incidents and experiences come alive through viner's writing. For anybody thinking of moving to the country, this gives an honest account, with all the triumphs and tribulations encountered by a very endearing family. Very humourous and thouroughly readable. Unfortunately I couldn't put it down...so had to read again!!
Good and entertaining read - recommended
The follow up to his earlier tome on leaving Crouch End for Leominster area, this is a very engaging and amusing book. I don't think I have read such a consistently funny book which I can relate to for years.
Some of the tangents BV heads off in are a great complement to the book; several made my laugh out loud on the train (and we all know how embarrassing that is..the more you suppress it, the worse it gets).
Unusually for me I read over 100 pages in one (late) evening, such was its page-turnability. A book to enjoy.
