Customer Reviews
Worth reading
On the surface this is all about this man's dating and sex exploits but what I liked about it was that he also thinks quite a lot about what it is too be a male and about male sexuality. I found those ruminations the most worthwhile aspect of the book.
Not what it says on the tin
This book is mainly not about Internet Dating at all. It is in fact principally a sexual biography of Sean Thomas, containing all the lurid details of his love affairs, liaisons and conquests over the last 20 years, admittedly funny in places. The actual dating part of this book is probably only 50 out of the 300 or so pages in the book. Before buying it you have to ask yourself whether you really want to read the life story of a struggling writer.
Guys - what are we like?
Frankly, I bought this expecting a sordidly entertaining read and it certainly ticks those boxes. The better news is that it's so much more. Sean's twelve months of internet dating acts as the perfect framework within which to explore a relationship with the gentler sex that, while not always entirely healthy is, one senses, not entirely exceptional either. Told with jaw-dropping, often appalling, candour, Sean manages to cover sex (of course), dating, prawn addiction (sorry to be coy but Amazon's proof-reader seems uncommonly sensitive), pr*stitution, and then shines a light on some of the less-explored (with good reason) nooks and crannies of the male psyche. Some of the detail I could have done without (no, really), and some of his adventuring goes beyond laddishness into borderline damaging (not only to himself), but his honesty has to be applauded. With some regret, I suggest there are some great (and rarely expressed) truths between these covers, making it an essential and oddly touching read for both genders. And, lest it be forgot, many many laugh-out-loud moments.
