    A Good Buy4
After a fair bit of research and looking at all the available makes/models, I brought this and set it up last week (Note: this is the newest version of the NC10 in black - sold on Amazon alongside the more expensive older version! - still can't see what the difference in spec is other than a 10.1" screen rather than a 10.2" [2.5mm]). I got a great price from Amazon and fast delivery, even on Super Saver.

I didn't want the HD left in the as-delivered two partition mode (for backup/restore). Any secure backup is only really going to be onto another (external) HD, so I don't see the point of this, a bit of a gimmicky feature. For my own purposes, I want to use all the available HD space in one partition, hence I deleted the existing partitions and reloaded XP from a USB stick (easy to do using the free WinSetupFromUSB utility - just Google it). It was also the easy way of getting rid of the pre-loaded trial antivirus and gimmicky Samsung software that I didn't want (the useful/essential programmes are Battery Manager, Play Camera, Easy Display Manager and the User Guide).

Having done this and loaded all the other software I need (eg. MS Office), the machine seems to be working really well. The Wireless LAN is available as soon as XP has booted and it's giving quick detection of available networks and very good connectivity. The Bluetooth works flawlessly to sync my mobile etc.

I have large fingers and generally don't like touch pads, but I'm having no difficulty using this one, and for intensive use it's easy to plug in an external USB mouse. The keyboard is great (almost full-size) with a good feel for a small machine - again, no problems for my large fingers to type straight away at my normal speeds. The battery life is fantastic giving 7 hours and still over 5 on 'intensive' workload (make sure you know how to best treat/recharge a Lithium ion battery for maximum lifespan - as far as possible, recharge before it's fully discharged - there's no problem with memory on Lithium ion batteries).

The thing is well built and for its size, solid and sturdy. It looks great when in use with the lid open, but BEWARE, as others have noted about the NC10 in black, the top surface of the whole lid is high gloss which I don't think looks great and is even worse when every finger and hand print is smudged all over it - impossible to prevent unless you only ever handle the thing with gloves on! For me, the key issue is functionality, not aesthetics, but I really don't understand what Samsung are doing on this, which I feel spoils the looks of what is otherwise an excellent Netbook. Hence the 4 stars rather than 5. Would I recommend? Yes.

    Very Good!5
Let me start off by saying that in order for me to give 5 stars in a product review, the product has to exceed my expectations. Doing what it says on the tin won't persuade me to give 5* - there has to be an element of "surprise and delight."

I have been looking at these netbooks for some time as I fly a lot and the compact size and long battery life would be a great help. I was bothered by the reportedly low performance of the Atom processor and that is probably what has prevented me from taking the plunge until now. But disaster struck - my trusty Acer Travelmate passed away during a business trip. My hand forced, I decided to buy a netbook, mostly because they come with XP and I have a lot of anti Vista software which I am not ready to "upgrade." (Yes I know that 7 has an XP mode but there are strings attached...)

So I bought the Samsung NC10 and over the course of a week, installing all my software and data and using it for work, I am very pleased to report that it has exceeded my expectations. I was worried that it would seem very slow compared with my old Travelmate (1.7GHz Pentium M, 1GB RAM), but I need not have been concerned. In real world comparison it seems to be a little faster despite all the reviews and benchmarks I read which said it would not be. Hence the surprise and delight. I have not even bothered with the 2GB memory upgrade. To be honest I dont think it need it - I have had multiple applications open including Outlook, Word, Excel and Powerpoint all at the same time and it just works. It plays BBC Iplayer content at full screen beautifully. Add to this the fact that it has an enormous 160GB HD and you have a very nice piece of kit.

It does not have an optical drive, but if you have another PC with a drive in it, you can either copy from the CD to a USB memory stick, or share the drive over a network (which is what I did). If you do not have another PC, you will need an external one.

The screen took a bit of getting used to, but after a week it seems fine. It is bright and the definition is very clear. The horizontal resolution is fine but I did miss those 200 pixels in the vertical at first. You can make it a little easier by hiding the task bar. I am just about accustomed to the keyboard now and the trackpad, though small, is very responsive and the scroll gesture function really works (it didn't on the Acer).

The NC10 looks and feels very robust. There is no flex in the keyboard, which the Acer did suffer from, and the see-saw arrangement of the trackpad buttons seems to work very well. The i/o sockets don't have any flex in them so they will probably stay attached to the PCB (which is something else I have suffered from - not with the Acer). It feels like it will last a long time. 5/5.

    ***STOP PRESS***
Not an issue with the NC10 but an important tip:
If you buy an external optical drive, be aware that any bundled media burning software can interfere with the operation of a 3G mobile broadband dongle. I had a huge problem with the OEM Nero supplied with a LiteOn DVD multiwriter. Plugging in the dongle resulted in instant Blue Screen Of Death. I eventually tracked the problem down to the way that Nero detects USB drives and the way that my O2 dongle presents itself on the USB port. End result: forget Nero. You can still use the drive as a CD/DVD ROM but writing media will be a problem. I have read that this is the case with Roxio too.

    Brilliant !5
Brilliant is the only word for this netbook.
It's surprisingly fast and very easy to use.
The matt screen is great, with good adjustment.
Battery life looks good, should get 6 hours easily with custom settings.
The trackpad takes a bit of practice as it is small, but other than that I cannot find any negatives.
Amazon Super Saver Delivery took 3 days, great service and a great price.
