Amazon.co.uk Review
The second album from Scottish electro-pop producer Calvin Harris comes with some fanfare, following as it does a couple of chart-topping singles – “I’m Not Alone” and the inspired link-up with Dizzee Rascal, “Dance Wiv Me”. The first thing that’s clear is that Harris’ proper pop status has beckoned in a clear tweak of style. Ready For The Weekend tones down some of the irony and idiosyncrasy of his sporadically enjoyable 2007 debut I Created Disco, in favour of a more straightforward club sound: less wonky character, but more songs that should impact on dancefloors and, indeed, radio playlists. “The Rain” balances sadness and uplift neatly, plaintive synths colliding with funky electro basslines and deranged saxophone, while “Ready For The Weekend” comes fitted with a big disco hook courtesy of vocalist Mary Pearce. In the words of Harris himself, it’s “stadium dance” – and while that means more hits-in-waiting, it also means potentially smart numbers like “Worst Day”, featuring fast-tongued MC Izza Kizza, feel like they’ve had some of the character bleached out. Still, it’s clearly a record that plays to Harris’ strengths, and if you’ve enjoyed the hits so far, there’s clearly more where they came from. --Louis Pattison

Calvin Harris is on a roll. He’s just had huge success with two number 1 singles, "I’m Not Alone" and "Dance with Me" and now has his stunning second album Ready for the Weekend which boasts three hit singles.

Come and dance with Harris
I will get straight to the point a lot of the songs sound the same. I was expecting some hidden treasures but alas all i got was the same backing track but different vocal effects. I think Calvin has an original style with his music and his collaborations with Dizzee seem to be a big hit. However on his own i don't think he is as confident. And this is clearly shown by his reaction to his first bad reviews. If he was that confident with his music then he wouldn't be affected with the reviews. Don't however let this put you off, it is a good solid album and far better than his prior. However if it's just the singles you are after then save your pennies and download them off of Amazon
A Little Something For The Weekend
Mr Harris' recent revelation that he has to sit down when he chats with
Kylie Minogue (because he's quite a tall chap apparently) should not be
held against him or impede our enjoyment of this, his second, album.
2007's 'I Created Disco' was a confident debut. Cocky, shrewd and knowing.
'Ready For The Weekend' is equally full of jolly japes and catchy tunes.
Truth-be-told I think it's a marginally more mature offering than it's predecessor.
The title track and single, featuring a marvellously fruity vocal
performance by Mary Pearce, is as good a summer dance track as we
are likely to hear this year. More catchy than swine flu and twice the fun!
Mr Harris could not, of course, be considered to be a first-rank singer
himself but he applies himself dutifully to the task in hand with droll
aplomb desipe his limitations. His Andre 3000-like intonation in the
frisky 'Stars Come Out' is an absolute hoot!
'Flashback' is a strong contender for album highpoint.
Familiar cliches are given a new coat of paint with convincing effect.
Not so with 'Worst Day', the project's only real let-down; a weak
composition unredeemed by Mr Kizza's urban-sprechgesang intrusion.
'Burns Night' is a curious instrumental confection which might well
make a good theme tune for an, as yet unwritten, C4 drama series.
'Yeah Yeah Yeah La La La' is a particular favorite with the family
of squirrels living next door (Mrs Squirrel, in particular, has always
been a sucker for a good falsetto and squeaked with delight when
she heard this one for the first time !)
I liked it too.
Recommended.
A grown up Mr Harris!
So, Calvin's new album - a definate improvement on I Created Disco. Its more grown up with a bigger, fuller sounding album.
Calvin's really worked on vocals on this album, he's done a great jobs with his and others vocals. Lots of harmony work and they sound fresh and pure. The 5th Track "Blue" is a prime example of his great work on his vocal harmonies. - lovely.
The album opens up with "The Rain". A feel good summer driving tune which is a brilliant intro and warm up to "Ready for the Weekend", his current radio smash hit which again is a feel good, electrotastic sythtastic song!
On from there almost every track is a sunny head bopping car driving joy. I've listened to the album 3 times now and it grows everytime.
The album in general is a job well done. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes a wide variety of Dance and the electro side of pop.
8/10
