Caveat Emptor
Having seen a number of negative reviews on other web sites, it was after some thought that I bought Norton Internet Security 2007 rather than renew subscription to my previous 2005 version. I am not yet convinced I did the right thing. Although advertised as an "upgrade" it is in some respects a downgrade. Parental control and anti-spam are now not part of the package. Luckily my kids are almost grown-up and I have alternative pop-up blockers; but other prospective buyers may be less tolerant. The Norton product is incompatible with Microsoft Windows Defender (which must be uninstalled) and prevents operation of Windows Security Centre. This is not iapparent from the advertising or packaging. On the positive side, installation was very easy, protection starts up much quicker than my 2005 version, and a full system scan takes about the same time. I take it for granted that anti-virus and all the other security features work properly (they certainly did for the previous version) but what I see as misleading advertising plus inhibition of Microsoft security products means I can't give it more than 3/5. Buying from Amazon, incidentally, is much cheaper than buying direct from Symantec, especially when shipping is taken into account.
Easy to Install & Use - some Changed Features
I installed the upgrade version as I already had NIS 2006 installed. The installation proceeded without problem and I've had no operational glitches since.
Comments:
1. The anti spam feature in NIS 2006 is not included in NIS 2007 so if you want to keep this feature, you should get an upgrade of the anti-virus component & not buy this. It does however pick up tracking cookies when a full scan is run & there is phishing detection capability (IE 7 also includes this capability) - no idea about the relative merits.
2. I've only installed it on one of my PCs so far. This had 18 days of unexpired subscription for NIS 2006 on it. I've currently lost these but am pursuing the helpdesk to get these reinstated. To avoid this problem, I suggest waiting until your old copy has expired. NIS 2006 which I had on three PCs did lose its unexpired life on about five or six occasions across the PCs which took a bit of effort to recover. I hope that NIS 2007 does not suffer the same problem.
3. It appears on a few days use to have less of a negative impact on the speed of the PC - NIS 2005 & 6 were recognised to be a bit PC resources hungry
Norton Internet Security 2007
I must agree with the above sentiments about lack of features this year. No more are the items I have come to expect from such a reputable name. No Parental Controls so I assume that my daughter can now easily access sites that I don't want her to. Also the feature to enter critical numbers from your credit card and other cards to prevent fraud from unauthorised transmission is gone.
There is actually very little in the way of customisation apart from the normal protection which by default should always be set to 'on' anyway.
If you have Internet Security 2006 and you have children or perform online shopping then consider staying with the 2006 version.
