Customer Reviews
A lightweight easy to use alternative to Photoshop.
As a software developer working mainly with web technologies, I have to constantly manage and manipulate images. This is a task I am hopeless at I can crop and resize images but anything else and I find it almost impossible. I have a full copy of Adobe Photoshop CS3 yet find the program totally bewildering; I have completed several courses on using it but to no avail. Image manipulation is completely different skill to software development, requiring a different mindset.
After struggling a friend suggested I try PaintShop Pro, as it was a lightweight image manipulation package designed to make tasks easy. So I downloaded the trial version and started to give it a try; after about an hour I ordered the full version. It is so easy to use and create the effects my clients so often want. The ability to apply effects and create what I considered complex tasks in Photoshop was an absolute doddle in Paintshop Pro. Adding a drop shadow effect is just a few clicks as is creating a reflection.
For the price this is a superb application and should form part of any developer's toolbox.
Very Impressive
I bought a new computer just after Christmas running Vista so a lot of my old programs won't run properly on it, and my old copy of Paint Shop Pro 6 was one of these.
I do a lot of digital photography and considered Photoshop, Lightroom and Paint Shop Pro X2. I downloaded trial versions and gave them a good going over for the 30 days free period that they came with.
To cut a long story short I couldn't justify the money on the full Photoshop, especially as there are so many new features in X2 that match Photoshop (perspective correction and HDR to name but two) and Lightroom seemed a very basic package compared to X2. X2 is very easy to use and carries over the general method of operation from previous versions.
So why have I given it only 4 stars? Running on Vista it is slightly buggy and occasionally crashes during the middle of a command, although it is not very often, happening once or twice a week. Maybe XP is better and Vista is the culprit.
I think X2 is the first version I've used that I can really say can compete with some of the best editing programs out there, and once the price is factored in it is unbeatable.
But, if you're in any doubt just download the free trial programs and run them back-to-back and see for yourself.
Paint Shop Pro X2
I am running this on a 2 year old PC with a 2.8Ghz processor and 2 Gb of RAM and it runs fine. Before buying, I downloaded the trial version of both X2 and Elements 6 and chose to go with X2. I felt that Elements 6 had vastly superior Raw processing capability but once you got into Tiff/JPEG work, it imposed too many limits on what I wanted to do. However, Corel definitely need to get their act together on Raw processing - they are behind the curve on this aspect of image processing, hence only 4 stars Other than the Raw issue, I am very happy with X2 and think it is excellent value.
