Synopsis
David Niven plays preoccupied, harrassed Bishop Henry Brougham whose prayers are answered at Christmas when an angel (played by Cary Grant) is sent from heaven to help him raise money for a new church, enabling him to give his full attention to his neglected wife (Loretta Young) and parishioners. The heavenly agent performs a number of miracles on his behalf, restoring hope to all. A delightful comedy which was remade in 1996 by Penny Marshall with Whitney Houston and Denzel Washington as THE PREACHER'S WIFE.

The Bishop's Wife (1947 B&W
When you've been running round the shops and your head is in a whirl with all the hustle and bustle leading up to Xmas, STOP... sit down and watch this film with a warm glass of mulled wine in front of the Xmas tree. At the end you will feel warm all over.
I have watched this film for years. I just love it. I adore Cary Grant anyway but him and David Niven are beautifully paired together. The wonder The Angel brings to everyone is magical. The scenes in the professor's house, the skating in the park, they just don't make films like this these days.
I would recommend everyone to watch this film leading up to Xmas, lose yourself in it and get back that Xmas feeling. WATCH IT!!
The oldies are the best
They don't make them like this any more. It's just an excellent film. Well made, brilliantly acted. David Niven and Cary Grant as the bishop and angel are magnificent. Loretta Young plays the bishop's wife who is feeling neglected because hubby is always so busy. Grant, the angel is sent to help out and Young begins to fall for him, and no wonder. Grant is at his most sauve in this.
Has a great Christmasy feel, Monty Wooley plays the Professor and is just great. Makes you long for the days when Christmas really meant something.
This is for those of you who have a sentimental streak and for those who don't, you will once you watch this.
I can't recommend it highly enough.
The Essence of Christmas
The most inspiring Christmas film ever, The Bishops Wife resists the overbearing sentimentality of other Christmas films and has not quite the harshness that I have found with parts of It's a Wonderful Life, its competitor for the title. Cary Grant and David Niven are perfectly cast as the Agel and the Bishop after early filming had the parts transposed. Niven who had sadly recently lost his real life wife, Primmie has all the angst of a man overburdened by work and lifes pressures. To see his prayers answered (and several of the other characters) by Grants angel is heartwarming and eye opening and gives us all a little hope. The film is perfect at Christmas but has a place at anytime of year especially for those looking for something to lift them from the ordinary in thier everyday lives. This has got to be one of the "must see" films of all time
