Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Elevator, the second full-length by Vancouver, Canada's Hot Hot Heat, is a neat reminder of how the land has shifted in alternative rock in the last couple of years. When "Bandages" appeared back in 2002, it was rare to find an indie-punk song that embraced tunefulness quite so readily; yet now, Elevator jostles for space amongst offerings from The Killers, The Futureheads, and The Bravery, all with a spring in their step and eyes on the Top 10. The opening salvo of "Running Out Of Time" and "Goodnight Goodnight" prove that Hot Hot Heat are up to the challenge, however, frontman Steve Bays yelping about "wallowing in a pool of gasoline" over jittery, mellotron-soaked new-wave that vibrates with passion without ever curdling into self-pity or emo introspection. So loath are Hot Hot Heat to not let the upbeat mood slide, you get a feeling that virtually any track here could be a single: but in particular, you should be making room for the piano-hammering "You Owe Me An IOU" and "Pickin' It Up" – The Clash's "I Fought The Law" on a fistful of Prozac – on your next mixtape. --Louis Pattison

CD Description
'Elevator' is the third album from Canadian new-wave revivalists Hot Hot Heat. Although the band still draw on the samenew-wave blueprint of their first two albums, there is a new found maturity in both scope and approach this time around, with acoustic guitars being added to the mix. Includes thesingle 'Goodnight Goodnight'.

Customer Reviews

A very strong third LP from Hot Hot Heat.4
Hot Hot Heat have returned with Elevator- an album that shows an expanded musical style. Latin tinges, pianos and organs, hand claps, guitars and danceable bass lines all merge together to form textured, bold and exciting songs.

Elevator is something of a departure from Make up the Breakdown. The perfectly formed chunks of spiky disco, synths and new wave have morphed into something more ambient and organic- tracks with varying lengths, different vocal styles and changes that give some tracks more than one catchy chorus.

But don't judge the whole album on this description and the song that most represents their more commercial style- Goodnight Goodnight. Tracks such as Ladies and Gentlemen, Shame on You and a brilliant part of Island of the Honest Man (where the whole song breaks down for a briefly paranoid and dark moment) remind us the Hot Hot Heat created Scenes 1 through to 13, and more significantly Knock Knock Knock.

Overall, Hot Hot Heat seem to be having a lot of fun- particularly in No Jokes- Fact, which seems to be a little nugget of faux- lift music. But they haven't neglected their lyrics, which stay witty, and have also shown new influences without neglecting their own greatness.

Don't stop to think - just buy!5
I can't believe at this point in time that this CD is not being rated at 5 stars, it is just as good as 'Make up the Breakdown' and so far i have failed to notice any poor tracks on it. For those people looking to find that new band with that little bit extra, then look no further. Ok so they aren't actually new, but the recognition has taken its time to arrive and thankfully it finally appears to be here. Probably the reason most of you are looking at these reviews is because you have heard Goodnight Goodnight on the radio. Admittedly this is a top class song, but the rest of the album does not fail to deliver either. I would recommend this to anyone and everyone!

Excellent4
Elevator is an uplifting, incredibly well written album, especially for such a young band. With references as wide as The Beatles, The Clash and even The Strokes in the songs, every track has something interesting. They definately know how to write a hook, also lyrically impressive. Hot Hot Heat have made a record exemplary of what a modern rock band should be, definately worth a listen.
