Product Description

"The Insight City Guide" to Oxford embraces "Town and Gown" to provide a comprehensive portrait of the city. It will appeal not only to tourists but also to new students and academics and to parents visiting their children at university. Local authors convey Oxford's unique history and take a look at academic life, Oxford's unique architecture, literary tradition and modern issues. Detailed itineraries, with cross-referenced maps, guide the reader around the colleges and other famous institutions. The features include a candid report on each college's reputation, a description on what the academic life here is really like for both students and academics, a profile of the city's "alternative" quarter, and a survey of Oxford's celebrated motoring tradition. Fourteen information panels and photo feature provide essential information on such subjects as pubs, gargoyles, the Oxford Union, cycling and punting. An exhaustive listings section supplies full details of transport, accommodation, cultural activities, and practical information. An excursions section covers trips out of town to Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwick and the North Cotswolds. The guide also contains a free Restaurant Map Guide, which reviews over 60 of the city's best restaurants.

Oxford City Guide Oct. 095
If you're planning a trip to Oxford this is a guide book I would definitely recommend, full of information from the history of Oxford and all the Oxford Colleges through to all the places of interest grouped together into the different areas of Oxford. Each place of interest has a little write up which is cross referenced with a number on a coloured map and is written in such a way that each place of interest leads to the next nearest place of interest meaning you can use the book to give yourself a guided walking tour. The book also has lovely photos throughout to back up all the information with plenty of maps. The free pull out restaurant map guide in the back was also handy to just have as a little map in your pocket. Anyway Oxford is an amazing place full of sightseeing and places to shop and eat. You won't be disappointed. Read this before you go to get the most out of your visit.

Quite a good book with a handy pub and restaurant pull out map in the back. On the downside I couldn't find any information regarding choral evensong which was a suprising ommision. Also, it listed information regarding certain college tours but when I phoned (ie Hertford), I was told no tour was available. On the whole a very good book on a city that if you've never visited, visit now! You won't be dissapointed..
