Manufacturer's Description
The Optio 50, a compact, lightweight digital camera that makes digital photography easy for virtually anyone. Offering the power of 5 megapixels and a 3x optical zoom, and founded upon an ease-of-use platform, the Optio 50 sees digital photography truly move to within reach of all consumer audiences.
Incorporating a handy Simple mode, the Optio 50 allows users to quickly choose an icon that matches the subject at hand and have the camera select all the optimal settings automatically for the best possible results. In addition, and to ensure easy use continues no matter where you go, the Optio 50 has also been designed to be powered by AA batteries, which are widely available internationally. However, in keeping with the Pentax tradition, ease of use is simply not enough. By combining the power and clarity of a 3X optical zoom lens with the sheer detail and high-level resolution of 5.0 effective megapixels, the Optio 50 is as sharp at shooting as it is easy to use.

WHAT A GREAT FIRST TIME CAMERA
I have seen many reviews on this camera some good and bad, but i think its great!!!!
If your like me and want everything simply but have a great picture at the end of the day this camera is for you. Its:-
1)Light weight (very good for holidays)
2)You can make a home movie (record your mates drunk)
3)Has a nice case, very good zoom
4)Very good battery life (dont keep buying batterys, get a charger and re-use)
One thing i will say you must buy a 54mb card as you can get around 170 photos on that, or 35mins of film. If you have loads of money get yourself 1gb.
Hope this review helps.
RESPONSE TO THE ONE-STAR REVIEW
I have been entirely happy with my recently purchased example, which is an improvement (time has marched on) over my Olympus C4040z, mainly because it is much easier to carry and is lighter. I have used it in all lights in a variety of situations and am very pleased with all the results. As it only takes 2 AA's and I charge-up four Ni-MH's AA 2500's at a time, carrying two spares is not a problem. I have not seen the equivalent Ricoh referred to. I have been taking photos for nearly 50 years and have had Rollie, Olympus OM and Minolta SLR systems. This is the camera that has led me to finally abandon using 35mm film.
Great little camera
First digital camera - bought it off Amazon last month, & got a 1GB SD card for about £50. and used it while on holiday. Very easy to use, nice LCD monitor. Pictures taken look great at 5MP.
Great as a quick, simple point-and-shoot camera.
