purple banding, posterisation, and fizzing bits...
I bought this tv a couple of months ago, and was highly impressed with it's all round performance. The HDMI input, VGA, even standard component was highly impressive. Great blacks, superb vibrant colours and a nice sharp picture from multiple sources, from upscaled DVD to standard digital from a satellite box. However, after the first week, I happened to play a DVD that used some quite heavy filtering, this was the exorcism of emily rose and there started my short and extremely irritating relationship with what the afflicted panasonic community lovingly refer to as 'purple snakes'. Basically there is a large problem with this set (and the 37 inch model). You will find that against certain colours the tv displays irritating bands of purple, that fizz and move. to begin with you may not notice, but gradually as you go past the 150 hour mark these purple areas get worse and worse until they appear everywhere, sky, wall, even faces in extreme cases. not every set has this issue, apparently, but certainly a huge deal do, and this is an acknowledged problem with panasonic customer support, who are working hard to resolve it. I actually returned this TV after owning it for 4 weeks, and swapped for a Pioneer. Exercise extreme caution if you buy this set, you May, may get lucky and get a purple free set in which case, the tv is great value, however if you are unlucky you will have spent a grand on a really shoddy picture. Basically I advise testing the tv with Flight Plan, Exorcism of Emily Rose, or Harry potter and the goblet of fire (underwater scenes).
For more info go to google, and type in 'Panasonic purple snakes'. There's a wealth of info on this issue.
Super Panasonic.
The first TV i own'ed was a Panasonic and since that purchase i have felt little need to change brand. I had been saving some money a-side for a long time for a Panasonic TH-42PV500. Then Panasonic released the PX60 range (Successor of PV500 Range) at a very attractive price. If you are thinking of getting this TV i have some advice, go for this model (TH-42PX60, And try and get one with the floorstand) as it is the best value for money in the range. The TH-37PX60 is normally only hundred pounds cheaper and when your spending this amount of money on a TV a hundred quid for the 42" upgrade is a bit of a no brainer. Then there's the TH-42PX600 its the same TV but with a SD card slot and SRS Trusurround XT with advanced surround speaker system and a higher price tag. And the TH-50PX60 upward range is on exspensive side.
As you may know it's got built in Digital Freeview. At the back of the TV you will find, x3 scarts(x2 are RGB),x2 HDMI,x1 Component(with audio input),x1 PC Monitor,x1 audio (L and R output). At the front, x1 S-Video,x1 Video,x1 audio (L and R inputs),1x Headphone jaxx and all the normal basic operating buttons(STR,-VOL,+VOL,TV/AV).
Two of the three scarts has Panasonics Q-link system that connects VCR,DVD,HDD Recorders for easy recording playback (HDMI supports this too). Push the guide button on the remote controller and you have a very usefull 7 day DVB TV guide that you can set what you want to record with the Q-link's system, very cool if you have a HDD recorder (works like Sky plus but for free).
You can buy this TV without the floor stand but its only half the TV without it. When watching freeview the picture is impressive but if you have a HD signal the picture is nothing short of amazing. This is perfect for running an Xbox 360,HD-DVD,Blu-Ray or PS3.
I would recommend this plasma television to anyone, as its clearly one of, if not the best out there at this price range. Iam 100% satisfied with this purchase and have no regrets. Go on buy one, you know you want one.
